David Brainerd was born in Haddam, Connecticut in 1718. He was orphaned at the age of 14. At the age of 21 in July of 1739, he was swept up by the Great Awakening and had a conversional experience. This made him want to be a missionary.
In September of 739, he entered Yale University and was expelled in February of 1742. He studied with the pastor Jedidiah Mills and then in April of 1743, he started his ministry with the Indians at Kannameek, New York. He also did his missionary work in Crossweeksung and Cranberry, New Jersey. These were his greatest areas of success.
The Indians near Trenton, New Jersey and had hundreds of Indians come at a time to be converted. David was able to secure land, built a church, school, carpenter's shop and infirmary.
David Brainerd died on October 9, 1747 in Northampton, Massachusetts. He died at the age of 29 years, 5 months, and 19 days. His Grave Stone reads "A faithful and laborious missionary to the Stockbridge, Delaware and Susquehanna tribes of Indians."
His life story has inspired many missionaries to do God's good work and he touched the whole world. He travelled a total of 15,000 miles on horse back. David Brainerd's Journal that was kept from June 19, 1745 to June 19, 1746 was published as "The Life Of David Brainerd." The book is still used as a way to get the church to share the Good news.
David Brainerd has influenced people like Francis Asbury, Jim Elliott and Henry Martyn to do what they had. His story had touched many more and will continue to as well.
On one occasion, When he went to the forks of Delaware, some Indians were planning to attack his tent. As he was praying, a rattlesnake slithered to his side and raised his head to strike, flicking its tongue near his face. But then, it went away into the brush with no apparent reason. The Indians believed that "The Great Spirit" was with him and welcomed him as a prophet.
