Celebrating the Epiphany in Mexico

January 6th is the Three Kings Day in Mexico. This day in Spanish is known as "el día de Los Reyes". In English translation this means "Three Wise Men Day". This day takes place on the 12th day after Christmas. This is when Christians celebrate the arrival of f the Magi who brought gifts to Jesus when He was born.

The 3 Wise Men brought gifts of gold, myrrh, and frankincense.

Before the Three Kings Day, Mexican children write letters to the Three Kings asking for gifts. The letters are sometimes put in helium ballooons and released. There are men in the city dressed up alike to what the wise men wore and many pose for pictures. On January 5th, there is a nativity scene laid out in the city and and the children would take off their shoes and place hay in them for the animals to eat. The next morning, the gifts appear instead of the hay in their shoes.

On the day of the Three Kings, families gather together and traditionally eat Rosca de Reyes and drink Atole. Rosca de Reyes is a sweet bread that is shaped like a wreath. Atole is a grain based drink.
