The Baker Blast August 26, 2018

The First Day of School

Welcome to another exciting school year at Baker Middle School! The administration and staff are finalizing their preparations for the return of our Bobcats. The energy in our building and across the district is contagious. We had an amazing week of professional development, the TSD maintenance and operation crews are putting the final touches on the building, and I'm sure many of you are completing your back to school shopping. The first day of school is Tuesday, August 28th. This will be a half-day. Students will attend all 6 of their classes and receive their syllabi along with other important information about their classes. All students will receive a new copy of their schedule in their 1st hour class. If you do not have your schedule or know your child's first hour class, don't worry! We have you covered. There will be a list of every student's first hour classes in the hallway outside the main office. Picture make-up day is September 11th.

iPads: If you have not picked up your iPad, our building tech will individually meeting with your student to get them their device and help with the set-up. When students are called down to pick-up their iPad, they will also receive a copy of the Student Responsibility Form. This year the school district is offering an optional insurance policy to cover damage and breaks. Please click on the following link to access the forms.

Transportation: By now, all bus riding students should have received their assigned bus information. If you have not received this information or have concerns about your child's bus stop, please click on the link provided below to contact the TSD Transportation department. Please remember to verify your child's bus number with them so that they are prepared to locate it at the end of the day. Students taking courses at the high school and elementary students taking math courses at Baker will attend their home school only on the first day school. Shuttles will only run on full and early release days. Follow up communication and reminders will be sent when the shuttles are not running.

Baker's Opening Staff Meeting

We had an amazing time at our opening staff meeting on Wednesday, August 22nd. Our teachers engaged in congenial conversations centered around the 6Cs, Deep Learning and Social Emotional Learning (SEL). Teachers are excited about creating structured communities in their classrooms through the use of character development activities like weekly Circle Gatherings to help support social growth and learning.

The staff also revisited our behavior matrix and student expectations as a part of our character education and PBIS program. Each teacher will start the year off with discussions about the classroom and school wide expectations. The key areas of focus for this year will include the cell phone policy, the dress code, and backpacks. Due to the buildings shift to flexible seating, limited space for the storage of backpacks, damage to iPads, and various violations of the code of conduct, we are asking that all students place their backpacks in their lockers during the school day. We appreciate your continued support in helping us provide a safe and conducive learning environment for your child. The Student-Parent Handbook includes our school policies and is available for your reference on the Baker Middle School website. Below you can find a brief overview of what will be shared with your child.

Final Preparations for the Start of the School Year

During the final days of summer preparation, the custodians and maintenance staff worked through the weekend finishing up several areas around the building. You will notice that we have a new bicycle parking lot at the front of the building for our increased number of bike riders. Several sections of the sidewalk were repaired also. Monday will be spent doing a physical check of each and every room in the building for readiness. To say that we are excited about the student’s arrival would be an understatement. Rest up and we will see you on Tuesday!
