where are they now?

Max Arthur left College in 2010, gained a degree from st andrews university and has now joined the graduate scheme at coca-cola.

After an extremely enjoyable 5 years at College (Leconfield, where else?), I departed in 2010 and headed to St Andrews University to study French & Spanish. When I applied, I never actually thought I’d get the grades but thanks to some persistent teachers in my U6th, I managed to scrape in. I had a wonderful five years at St Andrews, where I was allowed to dabble in a History of Art module, play a lot of golf and also represent the university in Hockey and Cricket, all aside from the reason I’d gone there in the first place, to learn two new languages.

As part of the degree, I spent a year teaching English in a secondary school in the south of France. This was a year which showed me just how hard it is to be a teacher, and just how annoying I must have been as a pupil at College. I also spent a summer working in Barcelona in holiday rentals which was very fun and quite eye-opening.

After graduating from St Andrews, I headed back to my parents’ house to start the dreaded job hunt. After turning down a few jobs that I really would have hated (and I’m so glad I did turn them down) I landed firmly on my feet with a place on a grad scheme at Coca-Cola. The start date was 10 months away and so I decided to take up the offer of an internship in Paris, working in Sports Marketing. This was a dream six-month period for me, living in Paris and working in Sport in the build up to Euro 2016 on some very exciting projects. Reluctantly, my time in Paris had to end. I did however still have time to squeeze in the planning, planting and managing of a small vineyard at a friend’s (OC Nigel Rowley) farm on Crickley Hill (stay tuned for wine…)

I moved to London to start life with Coca-Cola and the first rotation on the scheme of Field Sales. This involved driving around central London and working with small business owners to boost their sales of soft drinks with the help of the diverse portfolio that Coca-Cola offer, along with some extra support in the form of fridges and shelf-stackers! My second rotation was a complete change, moving into the office and working in Revenue Growth Management and analysing the performance of our brands and competitors, to work out where we can improve/change in order to maximise the potential profits. I’ve just started my third and final rotation on the grad scheme, which is working with online retailers such as Amazon and Ocado and drive sales of the portfolio through e-Commerce and digital marketing.

I’m still just starting in my professional life, but have some great experiences under my belt already, which I always try and take learnings from in any current situation. If I had to give any advice to those about to leave College, it would be not to rush into things, but also to jump at any opportunity to do something different. The more variety you expose yourself, the easier it is for you to form a better opinion of what’s right for you. No one lands their dream job at the first time of asking, but not everyone knows what their dream job is. Take a chance!
