Boys’ basketball senior night results in defeat against Stamford Izzy Blansfield '18

The Staples boys’ varsity basketball team suffered a defeat against the Stamford Black Knights on their senior night, with a final score of 53-81 at Staples on Thursday, Feb. 1.

Staples started off the game strong with a 10-3 lead with two three-pointers made by captain Max Sussman ’18. However, Stamford came back and ended the quarter with Staples only up by one point at 20-19.

While Staples was dominating the offensive rebounds they couldn’t stop the high percentage shooting from Stamford as the Black Knights gained the lead before halftime.

“We lacked energy going into the second quarter which carried into the third and fourth,” Sussman said. “They wanted it more plain and simple and when they started going in for their big run we did nothing to respond.”

Stamford held their position throughout the game as they led after the third quarter 66-38 and ended the final game by a score of 83-57. However, Staples fought hard in the fourth quarter as they scored 10 times within the last six minutes.

“The outcome of the game was extremely frustrating because we are trying to make a run for the playoffs,” Tristan Hochman ’18 said. “Our hopes to get to seven wins this year are slowly being crushed as we are running out of games but we will continue to work hard every day at practice to get to the playoffs.”

Staples’ next game is against Darien at Staples on Tuesday Feb. 6 at 7:00 pm, according to MaxPreps.
