Making Our Mark in Marlboro November 2017

A Message from the Superintendent

Have you ever had a hard time managing your emotions? How about solving difficult life problems effectively? Is it important to be able to establish positive relationships with others? We as a district realize the importance of these concepts and questions. We believe that children need competencies that are essential to help them grow into knowledgeable, responsible, caring, and contributing members of our society.

Marlboro Township Public Schools will be embarking on an incredible journey over the next several years. We are working on our three-year plan to implement a new comprehensive program for social-emotional learning and character development. We have begun work with the Rutgers Social-Emotional Learning Lab that will enable our district to help our students understand the importance of student engagement, vital, healthy living, bullying and violence reduction, prevention of drug and alcohol abuse, and increased motivation for learning and creativity. We are excited to begin this important journey that will result in a common framework that will provide synergy to our social-emotional learning and character development. After all, our children are our future and our most important resource. It is essential to help them prepare for the tests of life!

Sincerely,

Dr. Eric M. Hibbs

Full-day kindergarten is off to a great start! As you can see, we have been busy learning and making memories together. From sharing a good story to our Halloween parade, kindergarten students are learning about everything from reading and writing to sharing and caring for one another.

Our preschoolers continue to amaze us by how fast they grow! Students are already learning skills such as recognizing letters and numbers. They are also busy exploring the world around them and making new friends.

The first days of our new Full-Day K Program!

We expressed our individuality during Respect Week with Crazy Hair Day!

The Robertsville Volunteer Fire Company taught us about fire safety!

Students even got to go inside the fire trucks! A big thank you to Lt. Matt Spadaro and his crew for an amazing day!

Halloween Parade

Students voted for their favorite yearbook cover!

Option #2 "Bee Amazing" came out the winner by only 9 votes.

PTO

The PTO hosted their annual pumpkin patch this fall. Each student was able to pick a pumpkin from the field behind the school and was also given a decorating kit. Fun was had by all!

Asher Holmes Elementary School

Asher Holmes Elementary School's PTA hosted their first Veterans Day Breakfast. Asher students were invited to bring in a family member or friend who has served in the military to honor them. A delicious breakfast was provided as well as a few fun activities.

Dyan Shenn, PTA community activities chair, said "The Veterans breakfast turned out to be such a great addition to our Asher Holmes tradition of giving back to the community. Our students all seemed to have wonderful time honoring the parents, grandparents and others who served -- and our guests certainly seemed to enjoy the attention! We're all very thankful that so many of our community's veterans could find the time to participate."

Samantha Warner, mother of a first grade student, said "The Veterans Day breakfast at Asher Holmes Elementary School not only provided a way for the students to celebrate the veterans in their family but also opened the door for an entire student body to be educated on the freedom they enjoy everyday. The students and their loved ones filled the cafeteria full of spirit, the wall of heroes displayed at breakfast and throughout the school featured grandparents who served in WWI to siblings and parents who are currently deployed. This event went beyond serving breakfast and saying thanks, it celebrated the whole community and showed all of the students first hand, we truly are the land of the free because of the brave."

The event culminated with the veterans joining all of the Asher students in the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of The Star-Spangled Banner.

PTA

Asher Holmes has had a busy fall! We kicked off the year with an ice cream social where our students ate delicious ice cream to celebrate the start of a new school year.

In October, we had our Second Annual Color Run where we raised money for flexible seating at Asher.

Theater week was next where our students danced and sang their hearts out. It was such a fun week followed by such an wonderful show.

Our Monster Mash Halloween party and trunk or treat was amazing this year as we took over the Asher parking lot!

Our fall book fair was a big success and the students really enjoyed shopping for their favorite books.

Lastly, we had our annual ladies' night bingo which was so much fun! We had some pretty cool prizes and a lot of laughs!

The flexible seating for our students was recently distributed. Take a look at our teachers testing out the options!

The goal of flexible seating is to create a more comfortable environment that helps students be their best learning selves.

Defino students are striving to be respectful, helpful, and kind this school year. Each grade level wrote and took a respect pledge along with imprinting three thumbprints onto the Defino tree of respect that is now displayed in our front hallway as a visual reminder to the entire Defino community of our respect goals.

Defino students learned the importance of giving to those less fortunate than us through two initiatives: our Hurricane Fundraiser and our PTA's Thanksgiving Food Drive. Our students donated school supplies to children who were affected by Hurricane Harvey. Our families also donated an abundant amount of food for the Thanksgiving holiday and will be providing holiday baskets to members of our own community.

Defino students honored veterans this Veterans Day. Third grade students sung patriotic songs led by our music teacher, Mr. Letso, with a guest appearance by our instrumental band instructor, Mr. Young. Several veterans from our own Defino community were honored. The Colts Neck High School ROTC Color Guard joined us for this patriotic celebration.

Mar El Morning News on METV

Earlier this year, the related arts teachers at Marlboro Elementary started working on a project with the goal to transition the morning announcements from traditional over the loudspeaker to announcements by way of a pre-recorded morning news program. The primary goal was to have the news program run by the students for the students.

Mar El Morning News was born in mid-October! Each morning, seven students arrive in the Engineering and Design Lab, review their scripts, make sure they know the responsibilities for their role, and the recording begins. They mention daily news, school birthdays, and celebrate other student’s achievements including when Personal Learning Goals are reached. Fifth graders take their jobs very seriously and cheer each other on. The beauty of Mar El Morning News is that it is fairly off the cuff. Occasionally mistakes happen or words might be stumbled over, but the fifth graders recognize the bigger picture. The announcements are done and no one notices mistakes!

The fifth graders have proven to be the superstars of the school and are famous to many of Mar El’s younger students. Teachers comment that their students are enamored by Mar El Morning News. Christine Zappolo’s kindergarten students are so eager to watch the morning news, they gently remind her as soon as possible to open up the announcements so they can see Mar El Morning News.

Robertsville Elementary School

Robertsville Elementary School fifth graders presented their Explorer Museum at the Board of Education Meeting on November 14.

Students been studying explorers as part of their Social Studies curriculum. In order to help them better understand the explorer’s bold roles in broadening horizons, the students are assigned explorers to research. They then prepare research reports about their explorers which include the history of the explorer, facts about his explorations, and a synopsis of his accomplishments

Students are also asked to dress up as their explorers. They put on presentations to other students in Robertsville and to their parents and family members. The presentations are given in the form of an Explorer Museum, a real-life “Night at the Museum.” Students dress up as their world travelers and wait for passerbys to push their buttons – small red stickers placed on the floor that, when tapped by others, bring the “explorers” to life. They then speak of their history, travels, and accomplishments, and return to their statuesque positions until their buttons are pushed again.”

The fifth grade students study the thirteen colonies that precede the formation of the United States. The explorers’ histories are the first steps in learning about our country’s fight for freedom and independence. We began the Explorer Museum to get the children involved in their education. The museum gives them the chance to do something creative and “out of the box.”

In honor of Red Ribbon Week, Peer to Peer students from Marlboro Memorial Middle School "planted the promise" to stay drug-free by planting 250 tulips (by the outdoor classroom). The tulips will bloom in April which is Alcohol Awareness month. Thank you to Marlboro Township Alliance for the Prevention of Substance Abuse for donating the tulip bulbs!

In addition, Peer to Peer explained the significance of the project to their peers that morning and every student received a drug-free emoji themed eraser, courtesy of the PTA, as another symbol of their commitment to staying drug-free.

The activity was a follow up to peer leaders and HOT club members engaging their peers in drug prevention trivia and facilitating the signing of pledge banners during lunch.

Also, in honor of Red Ribbon Week, Peer to Peer CANstructed a drug-free symbol/message out of food they have donated toward our Students Change Hunger Challenge.

"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"

The Marlboro Memorial Middle school opened it's doors to the entire community on November 17 and 18 with their adaptation of the beloved classic "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". It was a weekend of "Pure Imagination".

Over 700 audience members were in attendance at three performances. It was a sweet adventure complete with actual WONKA chocolate bars and golden tickets.

"Our Marlboro administration, Principal and Assistant Principals gave us guidance and support which heightens our main stage production. The students and I are forever grateful to them", said Mrs. Shatsky, director.

Each year the drama club is proud to partner with "Students Change Hunger Challenge" food drive to benefit the Monmouth County Food Bank.

Veterans Day Assembly

Jim McCann organized another great Veterans Day Assembly. The event took place on Wednesday, November 8. Our eighth grade students listened as Veterans told their stories. Our music students played songs for the Veterans. It was such a nice day for our students and school.

Hurricane Relief Fundraiser

The Vice Principals in the district organized a Service Learning Project. Marlboro Middle School donated supplies and money to the Collier Country Public School District. The Builders Club members advised by Beth Pepitone and Nancy Savage put up our 'Helping Hands' in the two cafeterias. Students donated $1.00 and wrote their names on a hand.

PTO

Marlboro Middle School PTO started off the 2017-18 school year with the annual Strides for Our School Event on October 6. On November 16, Team 6F were treated to a hot breakfast including french toast, omelets, and tator tots for raising the most funds.

On October 28, MMS families & staff traveled to New Jersey Performing Arts Center for the performance of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in Concert. Due to the positive reactions, the PTO is planning two additional music/movie events – Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban at NJPAC in March and E.T. the Extra Terrestrial at The State Theater in June. Fall Sports

Spotlight on Creativity and Innovation

"It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge." Albert Einstein

3D Printing is a hit at Marlboro Memorial Middle School in Mrs. Macfarlane's class. This student group chose to make a beverage coaster.

Marlboro Memorial Middle School - Digital Escape from Rome

Mr. Fine's class from Marlboro Memorial Middle School participated in a Digital Escape from Rome. Students first participated in a "Do Now" about things that are important when working with other people. Students then broke into groups and Mr. Fine explained how the virtual escape room was going to work. The students needed to escape from Rome before the Germanic barbarians set it ablaze. The clock was then set for 30 minutes and the students were ready! The gates of the city were locked and students had to find the five keys in order to escape. In the virtual room, students traveled around the city of Rome. They had to figure out puzzles and riddles to get the locks to open. Each group also had one Roman coin that they could turn in to Mr. Fine to have a question answered or a general hint. The tension built as teams started to unlock some of the clues and time ticked down.

Spotlight on Technology

On November 29, Marlboro Township Public Schools hosted our first Google for Education Leadership Summit. We welcomed neighboring Monmouth County School Districts to our district to see and hear how our students and teachers are using G Suite for Education tools. In attendance were teachers, principals, curriculum and technology supervisors/directors, and superintendents from seventeen school districts.

Highlights from the day include:

  • Keynote by Dr. Eric Hibbs, Superintendent, Marlboro Township Public Schools
  • Classroom visits at Marlboro Elementary School, Asher Holmes Elementary School, Robertsville Elementary School, and Marlboro Memorial Middle School

Breakout sessions included:

  • Teacher Success Stories
  • Using Data to Drive Instruction
  • Data Analysis & Manipulation in Google Sheets
  • Year 2 Implementing a Systems Process for G Suite & Digital Tools
  • Blended Learning with G Suite for Edu

Feedback from participants:

“Each piece to the day had its own value. I enjoyed listening to the students sharing their experiences with the chromebooks. Both, the keynote and the breakout sessions were informative. Additionally, the classroom walk throughs were extremely impactful as it was interesting to see teachers & students in action, using G Suite!”
“How the district (MTPS) utilizes Google for Education... starting the discussion for any initiative with the "WHY"...”
“Great event! Congratulations for pulling it together and for all the hard work you've done to make a great learning environment for your students. Your passion shows through.”
“Today was very worthwhile. I like how all stakeholders (students, teachers and admins) were involved in the day. The vision is clear to everyone, and it is obvious that it is implemented with fidelity. It was so nice to see in action.”

Champions

In our Champions Before and After School program, we have been having a blast with our unit themes, enrichment clubs, and special guest speakers!

A favorite theme was “Gross and Gooey Physiology” where our Champions students are learning the science behind the digestive system and inquiry-based learning skills to analyze how various body parts function. Exploring body systems, organs, and germs will introduce students to foundational information studied in many health related fields. Below please enjoy our study of the digestive system as well as the eyeball!

Our Marlboro Champions also learned a lot about "POP ART". Our Champions students discovered the talent of artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, famous for his comic book like paintings and Keith Haring, who created mural with the hope of raising awareness of social issues. Take a look at some of our projects!

During our Simple Machines unit theme week, Marlboro Elementary School students were treated to a wonderful guest speaker, Architect Joseph Cardella. He spoke with the children about one his designs that is in the running for a new headquarters for Amazon in the northeast! The children had many questions for him and we feel we may have inspired some future architects!

Champions has also opened up our Science Clubs. #1 featured HALLOWEEN SCIENCE where they children experimented with “ghost poop”, learned about bats and participated in various, hands-on “spooky” experiments.

Science Club #2 is now underway – CHAMPIONS SECRET INVESTIGATORS (CSI)! Participating children are learning about forensic science as they determine who stole the robotic dinosaur from the museum!

Our Young at Art Clubs are open at David C. Abbott Elementary School as well as Frank J. Dugan Elementary School and our young artists are exploring “spooky silhouettes” and learning about artists like Vincent Van Gogh and Pablo Picasso.

WINTER BREAK CAMP at Robertsville is quickly approaching. On December 27 through December 29, we will be offering 3D Printing Club, Song & Dance Camp, and three fantastic theme days - Polar Animals, Fuzzy Socks Day, and Countdown to 2018! Please reach out to Area Manager, Thea Pace at tpace@klcorp.com if you are interested in registering.

Champions is an accredited out of school time program— our proprietary curriculum for grades K–6 is based on the latest educational research and focuses on building the three critical abilities that have the most impact on a child’s future success: social-emotional skills, executive-function skills, and inquiry-based learning. We thank the Marlboro community for their support and partnership. The Champions team is very dedicated to enriching our children’s mornings and afternoons. Please reach out to Thea Pace at tpace@klcorp.com if you are interested in registering in our program or enrichment clubs!
