Matter is a physical substance in general,it occupies space and possesses rest mass. Example:Books on a bookshelf, cloths in a closet.
Pure substance:substances that are made of only one type of atom or only one type of molecule. Example:diamond, pure sugar, water.
This is an example pure substance.
Compound:A substance in which the atoms of two or more elements are chemically combined.
Example:carbon dioxide,salt,and copper.
Pennies are made of copper which is a compound.
Element:each of more than one hundred substances that cannot be chemically interconverted or broken down into simpler substances and are primary constituents of matter. Each element is distinguished by its atomic number, i.e., the number of protons in the nuclei of its atoms.Example:Oxygen,hydrogen,helium,lithium.
This is helium an element in the periodic table.
Mixture:a substance made by mixing other substances together.Example:Trail mix, dirt, ocean water, and air.
Ocean water is one of the biggest mixtures in the world.
Homogeneous mixture:a solid, liquid or gaseous mixture that has the same proportions of its components throughout a given sample.Example:water, dissolved minerals and gasses.
This is a homogeneous mixture.
Solution:a homogeneous mixture of particles so small that they cannot be seen with a microscope and will never settle to the bottom of their container.Example:dissolved sugar in water, rubbing alcohol, and salt water.
Heterogeneous:A substance that can be physically separated.Example:Chocolate chip cookies, salt and pepper, and candy bars.
This is a heterogeneous mixture.
Suspension:a heterogeneous mixture containing a liquid in which visible particles settle.Example:salt water, sand, and muddy water.
if put in water this will become a heterogeneous mixture.
Colloid:Type of mixture with particles that are larger than those in solutions but not heavy enough to settle out.Example:milk, butter, and paper.
