Phone calls from scammers claiming to work for a particular business.

Door to Door sales

Basic chimney sweep ranges from $125 to $250.

Contractor will lie about damages. May even show pictures of other houses chimneys.

How to avoid this scam:

  • Check reviews online
  • Get referral from a family member
  • Hang up the phone call
  • Say no to door to door sales
Fake Waiter Scheme

A man or woman pretending to take order approaches table

They ask what drinks you would like

They then ask for your credit card because of the location

The fake waiter/waitress leaves with your card

How to avoid this scam:

  • Eat inside
  • Check for legitimate name tag
  • Don't give credit card until after meal
Scratch Card Scheme

Free lottery cards at exit of store

They are a winner and say to call the number on the card to claim prize

The call sounds very legitimate and lasts over four minutes

The information you give will be provided to telemarketers

The call will cost a lot of money because it is a hotline

How to avoid this scam:

  • Only buy lottery tickets
  • Don't call numbers on lottery ticket that begin with ex. 1-888
  • Only give personal info in person
Post Card for Seniors Scam

Approved senior final expense program is now available, to help pay for the senior’s final expenses

Could get the qualifying seniors up to $15,000

Must complete this request form within 5 days

“Small” application fee, but also to give all their personal information

How to avoid this scam:

  • Look at the names used, research, and determine if the mail comes from legitimate services
  • Don't share personal information
  • Get referrals instead of company's reaching out
