And With Her She Took Our Hearts Q2's story

Sometimes along comes the most special of cats and you know you were lucky to have them in your life. When they go, you are left with such a sadness and a big hole in your heart. It took me awhile to be able to write this.

"What greater gift than the love of a cat?”

On May 18, 2015, at the age of 7 years, Q2 crossed the Rainbow Bridge in the loving presence of her Beans and while being gently cradled in her momma’s arms.

Dear Sweet Two-Tah,

You were born in Beaverton, Oregon. Your actual birth date and origins are unknown. I gave you the birthday of January 8, 2008; the year is accurate and the rest was chosen.

My little Q2, you showed up one day in the summer of 2008 as a scrawny and hungry young thing prowling our backyard. I have no idea where you came from or how you became a stray.

"The smallest feline is a masterpiece.”

You lived outside for a few months and visited almost daily for food and companionship.

Whenever you heard one of us in the backyard you would come running and hurl yourself over the 6′ fence. You were one strong jumper. Sometimes I would look outside and see you snuggled in your daddy’s arms, both looking extremely content.

We always put out fresh water but silly you often drank the collected rainwater.

You were outside and wanted in. You had found your forever home. You chose us.

Will you be my sister?

One day I told your daddy that I felt you needed to be spayed and checked over and that “the little kitty should come inside just until she has healed from her surgery”. Your daddy agreed. Neither wanted to come right out and say that this special little kitty was going to become a part of the family. We just assured each other it was temporary.

The night before being whisked off to the vet for a check up, shots and spaying you were unconcerned. You happily slept in your bed.

Not a care in the world

On September 6, 2008 it was off to the vet for you to be checked over, vaccinated, micro-chipped and spayed.

You came home and recuperated in the spare bedroom. The sedation had you pretty relaxed.

It didn’t take long at all for you to make yourself completely at home and show more of your personality.

You had such a gentle expression.

And you exuded cool.

“I love cats because I enjoy my home; and little by little, they become its visible soul.”

You met the sister for whom you were named after. She was Quest and you were Quest2 but we always called you Q2 or Two-Tah.

You did love Quest but you loved Ginger even more and followed her everywhere. Ginger often wasn’t too sure how she felt about all of that attention but she is sad now that you are gone.

Ginger has now experienced 3 of her sisters going over the Rainbow Bridge. We always expected 16 year old Ginger to be the next to cross the bridge, but no, you had to go.

We brought you into our home in Oregon and a four years later we moved to Colorado where you settled in comfortably.

You ruled the roost.

"Way down deep, we’re all motivated by the same urges. Cats have the courage to live by them.”

As long as you had your peeps, you were home. And if you could be in a lap, all the better.

In late March, I reached down to stroke you and felt a very large lump in your side. It was such a surprise. You were always such a snuggler and I had never felt this although usually I hugged you full on or held you but didn’t necessarily stroke your side.

We took you to the vet. I told you that you would be okay.

I’m so sorry baby girl, I was wrong. We received devastating news — the doctor told us you had a very aggressive and fast growing inoperable tumor. Without treatment you had perhaps 2 months. With chemo and radiation you would have maybe 9 months, much of which would be traumatic for you.

We chose to not make you endure such harsh treatments and brought you home and just loved you. You were so easy to love.

We let you go outside into the enclosed courtyard. You were no longer able to jump and this made us sad. Back in the day you would have easily scaled the wall. Your sister Mariah wanted to know why you could go out and she could not.

You relaxed in the courtyard and could see from your reflection in the water that you were still beautiful.

Hello, me.

You basked in our love and in the sunshine.

This feels wonderful.

You tended to your garden.

But mostly you just wanted to be held.

You always wanted to be near. One day while I was mowing the lawn you kept watch just like you always did. While mowing, I scared a baby bunny and it ran to the patio for safety. You told the bunny, “Don’t be afraid, my mommy won’t hurt you.” The two of you just hung out for awhile. Oddly, just yesterday I was in the yard and the bunny scampered towards me and kept coming until he/she was right at my feet.

My new friend.

You struggled to get upstairs but you wanted to be near me and help me work. You often spent hours with me at work and you didn’t want to give that up.

You grew weaker, unable to eat or drink.

48 days after your diagnosis we knew it was time to let you go.

I took this photo of you shortly before you went across the Rainbow Bridge. This is the first time since you came into our home that you did not have on your collar. You’ve worn a collar since coming into our lives. It’s a sad photo. You were so tired and the fact that you could rest while on an exam table spoke volumes, telling us it was indeed time for you to go.

You are such a special girl and we loved you so much. We expected to have a lot more years with you but it didn’t turn out that way.

We hope you have a joyous reunion and romp on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge with your sisters, Shy and Quest. Tell them we love and miss them.

I had these made for us to wear. They give a small measure of comfort.

With all of our love,

Your Momma and Daddy
