Welcome to the new format of the BASD e-News. The e-News is designed to share events and activities going on in the BASD and the Lehigh Valley. It is my hope that you find it informative outlining BASD student and staff achievements, BASD opportunities, and area events taking place.

BASD District Insider to air on RCN

RCN is hosting a new show called the BASD District Insider. It airs every Thursday and Sunday at 6 pm on RCN Channel 4 and is also be available on the RCN on demand channel. The first episode aired on Thursday, February 2. The host will rotate each month from a very talented Freedom or Liberty student - with this month's host being a student from Freedom High School.

Congratulations to Micaela Posh from Freedom High School who will be honored for her artistic accomplishment(s) at The East Central Pennsylvania 2017 Scholastic Awards Ceremony. She won scholastic gold, and silver for her entries.

WEEKLY NUTRITION and FITNESS TIPS

Healthy tip:

Whole eggs are among the most nutritious foods on the planet, containing a little bit of almost every nutrient we need. Omega-3 enriched and/or pastured eggs are even healthier. Eggs are high in cholesterol, but eating eggs does not have adverse effects on cholesterol in the blood for the majority of people.

February is Children’s Dental Health Month. Did you know that tooth decay is the most common childhood disease and that 51 million teachable school hours are missed per year due to dental disease? Tooth decay is preventable. St. Luke’s University Health Network, Dental Program is actively supporting Children’s Dental Health Month by asking for dental product donations, such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, and dental floss. All dental product donations will be given to the children receiving dental treatment on the St. Luke’s Dental Vans. Dental product donations bins are located in the nurse’s office at Liberty High School, Freedom High School, East Hills Middle School, Broughal Middle School, Donegan Elementary, Fountain Hill Elementary, Freemansburg Elementary, and Marvine Elementary. Thank you for your donation.

BASD Employees: Get fit with First Strides Walk/Run Program for Women, Special rate for BASD Employees $40!

Do you sometimes imagine yourself fit and strong, striding comfortably down the road during an easy workout or a 5-K race? This gradual 12-week program will help you comfortably progress from the couch to walking, jogging or running at a pace that’s right for you. Weekly workshops include a group walk/run and presentations of various topics: buying proper walk/run shoes, training principals, injury prevention, motivation, nutrition and much more. Spring session begins Thursday,March 23rd at Hanover Township Community Center. We meet every Thursday from 6:00-7:15 March 23rd - June 8th. Sign up in February for $40. 2017 Cops ‘n’ Kids Eleventh Annual Celebration of Reading … and the Arts and Sciences – April 22, 2017 – Students Needed to Perform

With the help of our entire community, the award-winning Cops ‘n’ Kids Children’s Literacy Program has reached a remarkable milestone, distributing more than 760,000 free books thus far. To celebrate this accomplishment, and the children of our community, we invite you to join us (rain or shine) for a day of food, fun, family, crafts, entertainment, laughter—and, of course, literacy. Baseball Umpires Needed

Bethlehem Umpires Association (BUA) is actively taking applications for baseball umpires! Whether you are an experienced umpire, or looking to break into the game as a rookie, we have the appropriate level for you. We offer a competitive level of play for all levels of experience and the opportunity to umpire throughout the greater Lehigh Valley area. Our organization officiates over 1500+ games for Little League, Travel Teams, Connie Mack, Youth Legion, and LVMSBL (Men’s League) from April until November. Take your passion for sports and turn it into a part time avocation that will enable you to give back to the community. We accept members starting at 16 and offer education, training and mentorships to improve your skills and obtain higher level games as you gain more experience. If you are an experienced umpire and you would like to try to get involved in a group we would love to hear from you. The BUA has over 1500 games that we need to cover each season and we are always looking for new and experienced officials to add to our officiating team. Northeast Bethlehem Youth Sports Association is pleased to announce Spring Baseball and Softball Registration Information is now available. City Line Little League Baseball Signups

City Line Little League will be holding online registration for the 2017 baseball season. Registration begins on December 12, 2016 and will remain open through February 12, 2017. Registration is open to boys & girls, ages 4-16 years old, who attend Spring Garden Elementary School, Governor Wolf Elementary School, and East Hills Middle School or to residents living in City Line Little Leagues territory. Bethlehem Area Public Library Events

Book and Cook- Author Visit at Bethlehem Area Public Library, 11 W. Church Street, on Saturday, February 11. What would it be like to enter an intergalactic cooking competition? Author and Liberty High School graduate, Natalie Riess, answered that question with her popular graphic novel series, Space Battle Lunchtime.
