What is the Power Supply Unit (PSU)?

The Power Supply Unit is a vital part of the computer, serving as the heart of the computer, pumping power throughout each part of the computer system.

The Power Supply Unit transforms the power received from the power outlet from an Alternating Current (AC) to a Direct Current (DC), which allows the each individual component to get a constant flow of power. The Power Supply also downscales voltage from ~220V to the necessary needed voltage and can only accommodate a certain wattage for each component, acting as a transformer in the computer.

Power Supplies feature a number of different wires attached, each providing a certain voltage, including 3.3V, 5V and 12V respectively, these wires are soldered to PCB (Printed Circuit Board) traces within the PSU, which are called rails. There is one main cable which includes a 20+4-pin adaptor being the motherboard connector, containing the main cables for CPU, RAM and the motherboard itself. Lastly there is one last cable which is usually 5V, and is connected to the motherboard, which is connected to the motherboard, and aims to power the power button at the front of the case, this rail always has power and is ready to receive transmission as the user goes to power on their PC.
