Today’s tech-savvy learners deserve digital content which can awaken their curiosity, deepen their engagement with a subject, and ultimately expand the knowledge they acquire.
I am a reading addict. I love to read. I cannot remember a time when I didn’t enjoy reading. But too many people – my age, younger, older, peers and learners – did and still consider reading dauntingly tedious. I had never fathomed why before embarking on CLIL journey. Nothing I might ever say could get them off their beloved TV programme or phone and pick up a book from the shelf instead. I thought that eliciting some degree of curiosity might do the trick. I started peppering my conversations with non-readers with references to the latest books I had read, or my favourite bestselling writers. Nada. Rien. All my attempts painfully met with failure. A firm believer that nothing beats the pleasure of holding a book in your hands, I was even willing to give in to technology for the sake of reading. Then this week, I had an epiphany......
I ventured out of my comfort zone and I enjoyed the ride. Probably because, just like Orville Wright, I didn't have a pilot's license.
