Transcendentalism Marissa Guess

Nonconformity

“If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.”

-Walden, Henry David Thoreau

Demi Lovato came out with her fourth single for her 2013 album “ Demi” called “ Really Don’t Care” Featuring Cher Lloyd. The song talks about being with a guy who never put in the time or effort. The person leaves the relationship not caring to ever see the guy again or won't take him back because She is better without that guy.

“ You had your chance” to “ You don't deserve to know the way i used to think about you” Demi expresses her feeling about the guy who left her for someone else and tries to come back asking for forgiveness, But Demi says not i wont put my time and effort into you again and that i didn’t you. Thoreau would like this because Demi expresses how she won’t put i in the time for a person who she thought loved her but failed her. This connects to transcendentalism and nonconformity because the guy failing to put time in the relationship that demi thought was going good.

Self-Reliance

“Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string”

-

- Self-Reliance, Ralph Waldo Emerson

Kehlani Came out out with her brand new album called Sweet Sexy Savage in 2017. “Piece of Mind” is a reflection and Kehlani past relationships and her learning how to keep her peace of mind and continuing to move on to looking for to her up coming or future relationships. Kehlani also talks about being in process of breaking old habits and thinking that goes on in the mind. She sings about how now that she can love herself without attributing to her success to someone else. The Song “ Piece of Mind” encourages self-confidence.

“ My Heart is on my side” is what Kehlani says in her chorus. This shows the love that she has for herself and how her love will always be on her side through anything. She then goes on talking about breaking her old habits that she has saying “Said I'm tryna break off a piece of mind . A piece of mind that I can't get right (I can't get it right)” (kehlani).

This connects to Self-Reliance and Transcendentalism Because Kehlani speaks about letting her heart be the only thing giving her power not her career or her past relationships. Thoreau would like this because kehlani brings on the self- confidence in herself and tries to bring it for her fans.

Importance of Nature

“is harder because you will always find those who think they know what is your duty better than you know it”

- Self-Reliance, Emerson

Big Sean came out with a new album called I Decided. On February 3, 2017. From interviews with Big Boy to Zach Sang Show Big Sean gets the one Question that everybody wants to know about the Album. What is the meaning of the cover art and the album?

On the Zach Sang Show Big Sean tells Zach about the meaning of the cover art “ Even on the cover it’s a picture of current day me , there’s a picture of older me. And were parallel to the exact same place and what separates us is a tree.-” ( Big Sean). He then explains further “ That tree kinda symbolizes the faith between the two of difference of lives”(Big Sean). For the album Big Sean tells Zach about the album “ It Tells a Story” It tells a tale of a man who gets a second chance of life from god. In I Decided. Big Sean has a song called “ Light”. In the beginning of the song Big Sean says

“ I spent my whole life trying to improvise

I'm not saying that sh*t for you to sympathize

Spent my whole life tryna find the light that's at the end of the tunnel

I should have realized it was inside” (Big Sean I Decided.)

What that quote means is Just realizing Your inner power and once you find that inner power. Things would change for you on the outside. This is an example of Transcendentalism because Big Sean tells us about the meaning of the tree in his album art and what the him now and the future him have to do with it. I feel that Emerson would like this because Big Sean talks about bringing the inner self out and chances God gives us everyday in our lives.

Favoring Intuition Over reason

“What I must do is all that concerns me, not what the people think. This rule...is harder because you will always find those who think they know what is your duty better than you know it.”

-Self-Reliance, Ralph Waldo Emerson

In the year 2008 Demi Lovato Brought to the world a song called “ La La Land”. She explains in her interviews that the whole meaning to the song is to speaks out to society can change us to someone or something we are not. She Felt that famous industries make artist change so that people could like someone that we aren’t instead of our true self.

In her song she says “Some say I need to be afraid of losing everything Because of where I had my start and where I made my name”

A lot of people Would say about Demi is going to lose everything- Her career, her dignity, etc. Because she started on Disney Channel, and some Disney Stars had their downfall that ruined their career. She Says that it’s not going to happen to her because she will stay herself yeah she may have her downfalls but that won't ruin or stop her.“I won't change anything in my life I’m Staying myself tonight”.

This is an example of Transcendentalism because people thought Demi will have a downfall Because some Disney stars did and that she would be next. She brought this song saying nothing will change you can think that but it won’t. It's the message that she gives to the people who hear this song and thought she will have a downfall that think what you wanna think but here i am and i won't change or i wont let what you say get to me. I feel Emerson would like this because She doesn’t let what people say about her define her. She comes back and proves to them that If you have something to say she will tell you that she won’t back down and let this change her or scare her because that's what everyone thinks about Disney Stars that have had their downfall.

Simplified Life

“Live your life. Do your work. Then take your hat.”

-Conscience, Henry David Thoreau

Ed Sheeran came out with a song for his new album called “ Divide” and the song he came out with is called Castle on the Hill. The song came out on Jan 5,2017. The song tells about his group of friends when he was in high school and how they grow older and have there own lives. Ed old friends lives keep going on, while he is living the artist life. Back when they were in high school they had the simplified life they didn’t have much to worry about until now.

In his pre- chorus he say “Made friends and lost them through the years”. He starts to talk about the high school friends that he had before he started his music career. He then goes on during his Pre-chorus 2 saying

"We found weekend jobs, when we got paid. We'd buy cheap spirits and drink them straight. Me and my friends have not thrown up in so long, oh how we've grown”

He starts talking about the simple life that him and his friends had before adulthood hit them and onto his bridge he starts talking about how his friends lives now and what they do now in their adulthood lives.

“One friend left to sell clothes. One works down by the coast. One had two kids but lives alone. One's brother overdosed. One's already on his second wife. One's just barely getting by, But these people raised me. And I can't wait to go home”

This shows and also connects to Transcendentalism and simplified life Because it talks about the simple life that Ed Sheeran and his friends had that they didn’t have to worry about the adulthood. They got to worry about right there at that time. I Would Thoreau wouldn’t like it because it may talk about the simplified life Ed had back before becoming a hit artist but it talks more about how he think and not that he had the simplified life
