Effects Of Social Media By: Yesenia Villa

A survey that was given to about 10% of the student population of Paso Robles High School showed how they feel about social media.

Social media is something that everyone nowadays has, but it is also something that can affect our everyday lives. On average 95% of teens have access to a smartphone and 45% say they are on social media almost constantly. This may seem like a small percentage of teenagers that are on social media constantly, but in reality it is quite a big percentage of teenagers who have access to social media.

“What affects me is that sometimes I see people bullying one another and being rude, It pisses me off, and gets me mad”, said Salma Tidwell a fifteen year old Freshman at PRHS.

PRHS has at least 2,000 students, and about 39.3% of the 10% of students who took the survey said they feel that they are affected by social media, and the other 60.7% said they don’t feel affected by social media.

“ Teenagers like myself, and anybody in general should be careful with social media. It can be a cool thing to have, but it can also be a dangerous thing at the same time” answered one of the students a PRHS after being asked what they feel and think about social media.

Peer acceptance is a big thing for adolescents, and many of them care about their image as much as a politician running for office, and to them it can feel as serious. Add that to the fact that kids today are getting actual polling data on how much people like them or their appearance via things like likes. Adolescents have always been doing this, but with the advent or increase in social media they are faced with more opportunities and more “traps” than ever before.
