A-State Undergraduate Oboe Studio Curriculum

Objectives: The goal of applied oboe is to prepare each student for a career in performance and/or education, through the study of scales and technical exercises, etudes, solo literature, chamber literature, orchestral excerpts, reed-making, and pedagogy.

Year One

Scales and Technique

  • Pares Scales (and addition modeled after Pares)
  • Chromatic Scale D4–D6, slurred, steady tempo
  • Major Scales (Bb4–Eb6): C, G, D, A, E, F, Bb, Eb, Ab
  • Minor Scales (Bb4–Eb6): A, E, B, F#, C#, D, G, C, F

Etudes

Concepts

  • Daily practice routine (2 hour + daily)
  • Sight-reading
  • Intonation
  • Piano collaboration
  • Ensemble playing
  • Tone development
  • Vibrato
