WHAT I KNOW AND BELIEVE ABOUT MYSELF AS A RESULT OF MY LEARNING IS THAT WHEN SOMEONE NEEDS HELP OR SOMTHING NEEDS TO BE DONE EVENTUALLY I'LL GET TO IT. RELIABILITY IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ME SO IT MAKES SENSE THAT IT WOULD ALSO ACT AS ONE OF MY MAIN PRIORITIES.
WHERE I HAVE SEEN THE MOST GROWTH WITHIN ME IS IN MY CONFIDENCE WITH OTHER PEOPLE. WHILE BEING HERE AT VAAS IT IS ALMOST INEVITABLE THAT A STUDENT WOULD WIND UP COMPLETING HIS/HER ASSIGNMENTS IN A GROUP WORK FORMAT. BEFORE COMING HERE I HAD ALWAYS HAD TROUBLE WITH ALLOWING OTHERS TO TAKE CONTROL OF IMPORTANT PARTS OF AN ASSIGNMENT. OVERTIME HOWEVER, DOING GROUP WORK FOR AP ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE OR MUSICAL THEATRE , EVENTUALLY IT BECAME MY NEW NORMAL. I REALIZED THAT WHEN YOU RELY ON OTHERS YOU ARE ONLY STRENGHTENING YOUR EFFORTS INTO SOMTHETHING YOU NEVER COULD'VE DONE ALONE.
THE WORK THAT MAKES ME THE MOST PROUD WOULD HAVE TO BE MY ASSIGNMENT FOR AP ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE. WHEN I WAS FIRST HANDED THE ASSIGNMENT TO GIVE AN ARGUMENT FOR ONE OF THE TWO DEVELOPMENT PROPOSALS, I WAS AFRAID OF MISINTERPRETING THE QUESTIONS AND THEREFORE ANSWERING SOMETHING I WASN'T SUPPOSED TO. MY CONCERNS DISSIPATED WHEN I FOUND THAT I RECEIVED THE TITLE "Advanced" MEANING A MORE THAN WELL DONE JOB.
MY WORK THIS YEAR SUPPORTS MY PLANS FOR THE FUTURE IN MORE THAN ONE WAY. ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT BEING TO KEEP CLOSE AND HONEST COMMUNICATION BETWEEN YOUR PEERS AND ADMINISTRATORS BECAUSE THIS TIP IS USEFUL FOR ANY PROFESSION. SECOND THING I LEARNED FROM MOSTLY ANY OF AP CLASSES IS TO DO ONLY DO WHAT YOUR ASKED, NOT TOO LITTLE NOT TOO MUCH BECAUSE IF YOU GO ABOVE AND BEYOND FOR SOME OF YOUR WORKS WHILE THE OTHERS WILL SIMPLY FALL BEHIND. IT IS BETTER TO HAVE A BALANCE AND IT WILL HELP ME TO MANAGE MY TIME BETTER.
Evidence 1: Period 1 APUSH
I chose this piece of work for the portfolio because this is assignment was one that I got quite a lot and slowly got better at answering. The assignment itself had a minimum of 22 pages and to find the time and discipline to complete said assignment.
This relates to the SLO Solve Problems because I did have to consider how long long it would take to complete the assignment but I later realized that I could share the questions with a group and in turn share the answers. It worked well because every answer to the question wasn't rushed and thoroughly answered a question or defined a term.
An obstacle I had to overcome in completing this assignment was finding what source to use to correctly answer the questions. It would have been different if the teacher had told us to use the textbook to get answers but without that instruction there are too many variables. I asked my friends what search engines they used and referenced to those. I ended up mostly using the terms from Quizlet (website for students to input notes) to answer the questions and it turned out well.
If I were to re-do this assignment I would've spent more time answering each question. In other words i wish I could've started the assignments earlier that way I could check my answers before giving them to my group to make sure they were of the best material. I'll consider doing that for next year.
Evidence 2: Period 4 Precalulus
This project was chosen because it is seldom asked for a student to complete a math based project so I thought that this was interesting to include in the portfolio. For the project my class had to walk outside to the field and choose something to take a pitcure of and measure the angle.
How this relates to the SLO Solve Problems is that the project's objective was to find the unknown value of the teacher's choosing. I solved for this by using the tools and formulas that oír class had practiced for the past week such as the definitions of tangent, cosine, and sin.
An obstacle I had to overcome when completing this assignment was to figure out how to correctly use the new application given to me by my teacher. It was app that used a virtual protractor that I wasn't able to properly navigate. After a few more trials and errrors however I was able to correct it.
If I were to re-do this assignment I would have chosen a different object to measure because the way the object was structured gave an awkward angle because it was from a goalpost. It would have been better if I had chosen a building that gives that is easy to see the side of.
Evidence 1: Period5 AP Eng Lang
I chose this piece of work for the portfolio because I was surprised with how well I wrote the essay considering the amount of time I had and that it was a surprise essay. I was able to thoroughly answer the prompt with descriptive examples.
This work relates to the SLO Communicate Effectively because our teacher not only made us interpret what Chavez meant, but also she had us look at other essays. By examining other essays I was able to realize good techniques my classmates used that I then could use at a later time and also at the same time give my own input. In forming your own opinions of another's work you are able to revise your own to what the entire class can agree is good work. To me that is great communication at hand.
An obstacle I overcame while completing this assignment was more than anything the clock. Our teacher had out the time on the projector so you can imagine how nervous a person could get with the seconds counting down right in front of you. Although maybe it was more motivating than anything because it pushed me to write faster than I ever would have for an essay.
If I were to re-do this assignment I would have included a conclusion. Even if my body paragraphs were well thought out it is always best to fully complete your essays even if the part seems very minimal.
Evidence 2: Period 7 Spanish 3
I chose this video for the portfolio because of how well the video turned out. My friend Zoë was able to edit together an incredible assignment. Other than that my friends and I made a few fun memories in making this video and it was also interesting to see our teacher react while watching it. This assignment was creative, innovative, and out of the box for my group.
This relates to the SLO Communicate Effectively because all dialogue was in Spanish. Because our video was in Spanish it would be easy for only Spanish speakers to be able to listen and understand it too. If you were only an English speaker you could rely on just watching the actions happening then to guess what the situation is at hand. Not only from watching ours but also watching other groups' videos. Every group had a different way of filming, acting, or speaking but they all served an important purpose: practicing the commands we learned in Spanish.
The obstacles I had to overcome in doing this video were finding the time where all group members were available to film and how to make the sound quality as clear as possible. So my group decided to record our voices in Spanish using earphones and then have those recordings play in the background as the video showed our movements. It was a great idea that I think I may use agin if I ever do a similar project.
If I were to re-do this project I would have liked to included English subtitles because although some can guess what a person is anyone based on their actions not a lot of students felt up to doing that in our Spanish class. I felt that were amused but more confused by the video because they didn't completely understand what we were saying.
Evidence 1: Period 2 Leadership
I chose this event for the portfolio because it was an incredible event to be apart of. It was the first event that in a sense helped make in leadership. My friends Ron and Angelique went above and beyond in helping me contact third party speakers, come up with favors, and assign others tasks.
This event relates to the SLO Commit Time to Community because the event was to help raise awareness of the minority groups presently going through some troubles. Every day in leadership the students are supposed to ask themselves what the students would want/need and how we can make that a reality. For this assignment our goal was to better our school community in further opening up the conversation about issues such as gender discrimination or racial differences.
An obstacle that most occurred in planning a Breaking Barriers would have to proper communication between my group and the third party speakers. There would be so many things we needed from them and vice versa but since we only emailed one another fast communication wasn't possible. With time however the event turned out great because we gave ourselves many days to settle in with our plans.
If I were to re-do the event I would have pre-planned how the incoming speakers would enter the theater because I had to run back and forth during the event making sure whoever needed to be onstage got on stage and I'm sure it must've been distracting.
Evidence 2: Period 6 AP Environmental Science
I chose this piece of work because this is what makes me most proud. I wasn't given a huge amount of time to complete this assignment but I was still able to research many different things such as about Native American tribes, oil rigs, and fish farms. The teacher commended me for my research and grammar. I was very happy to receive that kind of encouragement.
This relates to the SLO Commit Time to Community because for the project we had to consider not just what was good for the position you were assigned in APES (Given: Native Americans) ,but also to vote for the development that is most beneficial to the community. For example I researched the environmental impacts of both projects the oil rig and the fish farm and found that the oil rig had many more risks if it were to happen. This project itself helped to realize the small things that affect our society as a form of domino effect from that I am able to know ways to better my community.
An obstacle I had to overcome is knowing what was necessary to include in report and what was not. I did t want to litter my paper with common facts that would make the teacher disinterested so after writing my report I reread it and took out sentences that weren't essential to answering the questions that I needed to answer.
If I were to re-do this assignment I would have had a peer read it before turning it in because I recently realized that peer revision is most helpful for both parties. We can learn from the things that other students had written for example if they included news articles in their statement about the oil rig.When asking another for their opinion the best results can come from it.
Evidence 1: Period 3 Musical Theatre
I chose to write about the the Wizard of Oz Musical because this is what I spent most of my junior year rehearsing for. During those rehearsals I learned many things about myself and others that i will keep with my forever. It was such a blessing to be sport of something so surreal and thrilling.
This musical relates to the SLO Remain Curious because in improving with each day that went by I wonder what will come in the future. Will I be able to reach up to my full potential by senior year? The confidence and commitment regimen I gained from having been in the show is something that I will need when going into college in year 2019.
An obstacle I had to overcome was finding the balance between rehearsals and completing homework afterwards. Some days I would come home around 6:30- 7 pm that left me little time to have dinner, do homework, then shower before going to bed. I struggled for a little while in turning in my assignments on time but overtime I assumed a rhythm.
If I were to do something different I would try to practice singing while doing jumping jacks. Doing that would have come in handy for dancing Jitterbug! In that dance I was always very very breathless at the end of it I was practically wheezing because on top of singing high I had to jump around a lot.
