Last night I had the pleasure of photographing about 200+ cricketers at their Annual Dinner & Awards evening at Ribby Hall, Kirkham, Preston. The evening was sponsored by Moore & Smalley Accountants, who are leading independent providers of accounting, business advisory and wealth management services. They have also been sponsoring the Palace Shield Cricketers for the past 23 years which in itself is a remarkable achievement.
The evening started off with drinks and a superb 4 course meal and lots of good natured banter until the quiz started, then it was serious business. Luis Reece of Derbyshire Cricket fame, was handing out the awards on the night and a superb job he did too.
Trophies and medals were given to the winners and runners up in all 8 of the Saturday divisions plus the winners of the 3 Sunday divisions and 15 medals were given to each team.
There were also prizes for the batting, bowling and wicket-keeping in each division plus umpires, player of the season and club of the year. There were a few surprises for certain individuals on the night with a few tears too.
The night drew to a close with a most excellent raffle of super cricket related prizes.
As a photographer who knows nothing about cricket I learnt some things last night. Phil Tufnell has been on I'm A Celebrity and Graeme Swan is in Strictly, and that's my limit.
The most important thing that I found out came courtesy of a gentleman at the beginning talking on the stage (apologies for not knowing his name). He was so passionate about the game and very forthright. I especially loved how he talked about the kids learning cricket and to show them the way, or else there would be no cricket. This passion I can understand, I feel the same about photography and to pass on knowledge is a wonderful thing. So kudos to all you cricket guys!!
Lastly, thank you to John Smith for having me as your photographer for the evening and thank you for making me feel so welcome. I hope you like the photos enough to want to book me again next year, haha.
