2018 CCA Herding Regionals by Colliesonline.com

The Collie Club of America held its Regional Herding Trials in Olympia, Washington on September 15 -16, and in Charlton, Massachusetts on September 22 - 23. It’s the eleventh year for the parent club’s annual marquee herding event and the fourth year that it has been divided into eastern and western trials, which include the Herding Instinct Test, Herding Test, Pre-trial Test, and Started, Intermediate and Advanced trials with sheep and ducks.

First chapter written in the East

On Saturday, Ellen Adomelis was the judge for the Herding Instinct Test, the Herding Test, and the Pre-trial Test at the Eastern Herding Regional. She had an entry of 14 collies, which produced 13 qualifiers.

Darlene Laurin judged the Started, Intermediate, and Advanced trials (sheep and ducks), A and B courses. She had an entry of 25 and presided over 20 qualifiers.

High In Trial came from the Course B classes in the form of DC Millknock Tri The Next Chapter, BN, RN, CD, TD, HSADs, HIADs, HXAD, HSBD, MXS, MJS, MFS, T2B3 and owner-handler, Noreen Bennett, with a score of 95 in the Started competition, featuring ducks. The rough tri bitch also won the Advance A (ducks) trial with a score of 90.

Defending HIT from the 2017 Saturday trials in Birdboro, Pennsylvania, was Ability’s Time Traveler, HSAS and owner-handler, Christine Carilli, who earned Reserve High In Trial on this day with a score of 94 in Started on the B course (ducks). The smooth sable dog also had a qualifying run of 85.5 in Intermediate on the A course (ducks).

The other first-place qualifiers from the Course A trials were GCH Kelso’s Takin’ The High Road, PT and owner-handler, Nancy Kelso, DVM, with a score of 90 in Started (sheep), Borealis Starman, PT and owner-handler, Christine Carilli, with a score of 80 in Started (ducks), Riverrun Mudman, AX, AXJ, OF, HSASD, HIAD, HSBD, HIBD and owner-handler, Martha Ciaschini, with a score of 81 in Intermediate (sheep), Ability’s Time Traveler, HSAS and owner-handler, Christine Carilli, with a score of 85.5 in Intermediate (ducks), and Blu Ridge Justfied and owner-handler, Sandra Getz, with a score of 77 in Advanced (sheep) to go with the Course B qualifying run in the Intermediate (ducks) trial with a score of 83.

All four collies entered in the Herding Instinct Test earned Qs. Those qualifiers were Crispin Artemis with owner-handler, Joanne Jesse, Millknock’s Incredible Southern Charm, RN, TKN, with owner-handler, Vicki Lincoln, Riverrun Galatean We’re Gonna Make It After all and Aryggeth’s Shenanigans, both with owner-handler, Rebecca Smith.

The Herding Test produced four qualifiers. Sheep were the object of their intense concentration. Those Qs were earned by Ryder’s Something Fine with owner-handler, Melanie Robbins, GCH Heatherfield Nine Bridges Blumatra and CH Heatherfield Nine Angels, both with owner-handler Ronald Luster, and CH Millknock Razzle Dazzle Razzmatazz, MX, MXJ, XF, TKI, with owner-handler, Mary Valentine.

The Pre-trial Test, employing sheep, had two qualifiers, including CH Misty Morn Beachrose Bad To The Bone, with owner-handler Margaret Komosinksi, and CH Crispin Dancing Man, HT, RA, NA, NAJ, OF, VA, with owner-handler, Elizabeth Keohan.

The Pre-trial Test, employing ducks, also had two qualifiers, including Millknock Spectacular Forecast, TKN, with owner-handler, Carol Lariviere, and Millknock Turn The Page To Wonderful, TKI, HT with owner-handler, Noreen Bennett.

Chapter repeats as Sunday Sequel

Darlene Laurin was the judge for all of Sunday’s activities at the Eastern Herding Regional. She had an entry of 41 collies, which produced 32 qualifiers.

Millknock Tri The Next Chapter, BN, RN, CD, TD, HSADs, HIADs, HXAD, HSBD, MXS, MJS, MFS, T2B3 and owner-handler, Noreen Bennett, repeated as High In Trial with a score of 91 on the Advance A course, featuring ducks. The rough tri bitch also topped the Advance A (sheep) trial with a score of 69.5.

Ability’s Time Traveler, HSAS and owner-handler Christine Carilli repeated as Reserve High In Trial with a qualifying run of 90 in Started on the B course (ducks). The smooth sable dog also had a qualifying run of 89.5 in Intermediate on the A course (ducks).

The other class winners were Skydancer’s Diamond In The Rough and owner-handler Nancy Kelso, with a score of 77 in Started (sheep) and 89.5 in Started (ducks) on the A course, Blue Ridge Justified and owner-handler, Sandra Getz with a score of 86 in Intermediate (ducks), and Riverrun Mudman, AX, AXJ, OF, HSASD, HIAD, HSBD, HIBD and owner-handler, Martha Ciaschini, with a score of 83 in Advanced (ducks).

Judge Laurin awarded Qs to all six collies entered: Riverrun Galatean We’re Gonna Make It After all and Aryggeth’s Shenanigans, both with owner-handler, Rebecca Smith, Greatview “A” List Broadway Baby and PACH Greatview Turn Off The Lights, both with owner-handler Sue Wolf, Crispin Artemis with owner-handler, Joanne Jesse, and Millknock’s Incredible Southern Charm, RN, TKN with owner-handler, Vicki Lincoln.

The Herding Test was conducted with sheep and four collies earned Qs. Those qualifiers were: CH Heatherfield Nine Angels and GCH Heatherfield Nine Bridges Blumatra, both with owner-handler, Ronald Luster, CH Millknock Razzle Dazzle Razzmatazz, MX, MXJ, XF, TKI with owner-handler, Mary Valentine, and Ryder’s Something Fine with owner-handler, Melanie Robbins.

The Pre-trial Test featuring ducks had three qualifiers, including Millknock Turn The Page To Wonderful, TKI, HT with owner-handler Noreen Bennett, Millknock Spectacular Forecast, TKN with owner-handler Carol Lariviere, and CH Crispin Dancing In The Dark with owner-handler Barbara Corriveau.

How the West was won

Ron Fisher was the judge for Saturday’s activities at the Western Herding Regional. He had an entry of 29 collies, which yielded 21 qualifiers.

In a reversal from the Saturday results of a year ago, High In Trial came from the Started trial of the A course, featuring sheep, in the form of Borealis Trouble And Desire, RN, PT, ACT1, TKN and owner-handler, Jeanine Blaner, with a score of 88. She was also the owner-handler of Reserve High In Trial, TC MACH2 PACH Ability’s Rock Star, CD, RAE2, HXAdMsM, HXBs, HXBdM, MXB, MJS, XF, MXPB, MJPS, MFP, PAX, TKN, with a score of 81 in the Advanced trial of the B course, featuring ducks. The rough sable dog also qualified in the Advanced (sheep) trial with a score of 75 and the Advanced (ducks) trial with a score of 71 — both on the A course.

Judge Fisher awarded 10 Herding Instinct Qs to the following collies: Moxies Dark Roast, Snovalley Tell Me All About It, Markos Polar Express, Moxie Measure Me Sweet, Moxie’s Star Lord, RN, Snovalley Annie Get Your Gun, Moxie’s Made To Shine, and Aurealis Landmark of Marvale.

The Herding Test produced three qualifiers, including Castlebar’s Highland Storm, CD, RE, CGCA, PCD, CH Sinkona’s Mardi Gras, and Castlebar’s Celtic Ballad, BN, RN, CGC, TKN.

The Pre-trial Test also yielded three qualifiers, including Belfair Nights In White Satin, GCH Sinkona’s Sumerhill Dancer and CH Snovalley Belfair Barely Harry Too! CGC, IT, CGCA.

Best in the West

Craig Watson was the judge pf Sunday’s festivities at the Western Herding Regional. He had an entry of 37 collies, which produced 22 qualifiers.

CH Shadaglen I’ll Root For You, TD, HXAds, HSBs and owner-handler, Suzanne Schwab proved their durability and consistency by earning High Combined on the strength of Sunday’s High In Trial from the Advanced (ducks) trial on the B course, with a score of 92 and a qualifying run of 75 on Saturday. The smooth dog also qualified in the Intermediate (sheep) trial on the B course, with a score of 74.

TC MACH2 PACH Ability’s Rock Star, CD, RAE2, HXAdMsM, HXBs, HXBdM, MXB, MJS, XF, MXPB, MJPS, MFP, PAX, TKN and Jeanine Blaner took home Reserve High In Trial, with a qualifying score of 82 in the Advanced (ducks) trial on the B course. The rough sable dog also topped the Advanced (sheep) trial on the A course with a score of 90 and Q’d in the Advanced (ducks) trial on the A course with a score of 72.5.

Judge Watson awarded 11 Herding Instinct Qs to the following collies: Moxie’s Star Lord, RN, Snovalley Annie Get Your Gun, GCH Zandria’s Burn’n It Down, CH Cynclair Bel Air, Celebrate I’ll Stand By You Of Silco, RN, CGC, CH Zandria’s’N Tercan’s Kiss My Freckles, Snovalley Tell Me All About It, Majestic Midnight Runner, Moxie’s Law Of The Jungle, Moxie Made To Shine, Majestic Dancing Breeze.

The Herding Test produced three qualifiers, including Castlebar’s Highland Storm, CD, RE, CGCA, PCD, CH Sinkona’s Mardi Gras, and Castlebar’s Celtic Ballad, BN, RN, CGC, TKN.

The Pre-trial Test added to more qualifiers to the overall list: Belfair Nights In White Satin and GCH Sinkona’s Sumerhill Dancer.
