Week 8: Journal Entry MENTORSHIP

Currently for my co-op experience, I am conducting an action research project where I have created an online mentorship program for first-year students to determine its effect on retention. Although my co-op will come to an end in May, I plan to continue teaching the course to help students progress throughout their higher education experience. After reviewing this week’s topic material I plan to extend the student population for this course to transfer students as well. I think by incorporating transfer students in the mix of information that I am currently providing freshman in the mentorship program will also help those student succeed (or at least that’s what I’m hoping for, the course is still in progress).

Currently what is being discussed in the course that can be beneficial to freshman can also be useful to transfer students. The basis of the course is to help students get acclimated with the campus, learn about the services and resources offered, determine a career path, learn new skills needed to be successful, etc. I think by providing a transfer student with a primary contact during their first semester can really help make an impact on a student’s overall success. I hope to learn more about this through my co-op experience so that I can further help in preparing students for college success. And potentially expand on the mentorship across campus to help other colleges and departments having retention issues.
