The Catcher In The Rye

This novel was published in 1951 by j.d salinger

Main idea of Holden and what he struggles with in life

Throughout the story Holden goes through adultery hood in his young ages because of what hes seen and done in his passed and he struggles with it. He tries to get people to talk to but everyone is a phony and he wants nothing to to with them because he doesn't know if he can trust them. P.T.S.D is a type of depression that's caused by traumatic events in ones past. In J.D salingers The catcher in the rye, Holden suffers from P.T.S.D exhibiting symptoms of frightening thoughts and fearful flashbacks.

Frightening thoughts

Holden struggles with frightening thoughts because he constantly looks back at his brothers death and he even pictures his own death. The symptoms can start from the person’s own thoughts and feelings. Words, objects, or situations that are reminders of the event can also trigger re-experiencing symptoms. In chapter 20 he says " i hope to hell if i do die i hope someone just dumps me" this is showing he doesn't care.

Outburst

Holden has random outburst when he holden found out about stradlater and jane he gets really made because he feels as if jane is the only person he doesnt think is a phony and he likes her and doesnt want anyone else with her.

Conclusion

The reason i think he struggles with P.T.S.D is because its cause by events that occurred in the past and a lot of things had append in his past like his brothers death and his friends death and just thinking about his own doesn't make it any better but at the end of the book he seems like he is getting help and is actually giving out good advice instead of explaining every negative thing hes done and happened in life.
