From the Principal

Today, God our Father, we ask your blessing on all fathers.

For new fathers, coming to terms with new responsibility.

For those who are trying to balance the demands of work, marriage and children.

For those who have to struggle to be a part of their child's life.

For those who are unable to feed their children due to poverty.

For those whose children have physical, mental or emotional disabilities.

For those whose child has been placed for adoption.

For those whose love and support has offered healing.

For those that have adopted a child into their family.

For those who have lost a child.

For those who care for the children of others.

For those whose children have left home.

Bless all fathers, that they may be able to commit themselves selflessly as mentor, protector and provider, shaping the direction of their child's character by giving love, care and guidance.

Bless all fathers, that they may lead their children to know and do what is good, living not for themselves alone, but for God and for others.

Amen.

School Musical Tickets

Last Minute Musical Messages

Just nine more sleeps until the school musical. Here are a few last-minute reminders:

  1. The rehearsal and the performance will take place in the Roger Kennedy Centre, St Mary’s Catholic College, Gateshead. The students will be taken by bus to the rehearsal venue on the day of the show (Thursday 5th September), leaving St Patrick’s at 9.00am.
  2. The evening performance will begin at 7.00pm. Please bring your children to “D” Block, which is adjacent to the Roger Kennedy Centre. Leave your children with us in “D” Block, then proceed to the hall and be seated ready for the performance.
  3. The students are asked to arrive at the college no later than 6.30pm, dressed in the costumes that they will wear on stage. Students in Years 3 to 6 will be required to bring their costume changes in an easily identifiable bag with their name clearly shown on the bag. When the children arrive at “D” Block, their class teacher will instruct them as to where it should be stored.
  4. The students are advised to bring a water bottle and something to read while they are waiting between scenes. The students are not permitted to bring phones or electronic devices to “D” Block.
  5. Your tickets do not specify a particular seat for the performance. The hall will be opened at 6.30pm. Audience members are asked to queue in an orderly manner if they arrive before the doors are opened.
  6. Car parking will be available:

- In the St Mary’s Catholic College car park.

- In the St Paul’s car park, Felton St, Gateshead.

- In the HopeUC car park, 76-80 Felton St, Gateshead.

- In a small unsealed car park opposite HopeUC.

- Local streets.

7. The consumption of alcohol is not permitted on the school site.

8. After the evening performance, the parents and carers will:

- Report to their child’s class teacher in “D” Block.

- Tell the teacher that you are taking your child so that they can record that the child has been collected.

This will be a wonderful performance and we are very excited to be staging it. Thank you for your support.

Sponsorship Money

Thanks to our school community for your generosity in sponsoring our students for their participation in the recent Mary MacKillop Games. We raised $1811.00 towards a number of large-scale projects, including flexible learning spaces in our classrooms and improvements to our outdoor recreation facilities.

Lake Regional Football (Soccer) Gala Day

I have inadvertently given the wrong information regarding the Catholic Schools Lakes Regional Football (Soccer) Gala Day on Thursday 19th September. The Year 3/4 team is a mixed team of girls and boys – not just boys. If your girl is interested in playing at the gala day, please let me know by email no later than Thursday this week (29th August). Email to peter.green@mn.catholic.edu.au.

If more than four girls wish to play, I will conduct a trial on Monday morning next week (2nd September) at 8.00am at the school. I will confirm with you through Compass this Friday whether or not this trial will proceed.

Holy Moley That Was Hard!

We had an amazing day (and night) – full of giggles and hurdles and mind games as we traversed 50kms of challenging bushland along the Oxfam trail last Saturday. We were supported by our extraordinary crew, who helped us with great humour and thoughtfulness at each checkpoint. Every step was worth it, even though some of them were super tough. Together we did it, for each other, for Oxfam and for our very generous sponsors – many of whom were YOU! Thank you so much! The Holy Moleys raised $4,150.00.

More Amazing Oxfam Teams . . .

A big shout out to the ‘Treasurers and Presidents’ and the ‘Walkie Talkies x 4’. Both teams had parents of St Pats families among them; (Jodie McIvor, Fiona Layton, Jillian Bowmaker and Jane Ayshford) . . . They too traversed the national parks and completed the 50kms, raising funds to help tackle poverty around the world. – HATS OFF LADIES on an amazing achievement!

You can still donate to any of the teams here: https://trailwalker.oxfam.org.au

Book Week Celebrations

At St Patrick’s, we are celebrating Book Week from Saturday 14th September to Thursday 19th September. The theme of Book Week is “Reading is my Secret Power”. This theme is the focus of our library lessons throughout Term 3. We have many exciting events planned to highlight the importance of reading and literature in our lives:

1. On Saturday 14th September we will launch our St Patrick’s Book Week with a family Mass at 6:00pm, followed by pizza, pyjamas and picture books. The children are invited to wear their pyjamas to Mass. After Mass we will go to the hall for a pizza feast. We will then move over to some of the classrooms where many of our library books will be available to read, and we will have 10 to 15 minutes of family reading to acknowledge National Reading Hour. The Book Fair will be set up and open for sales in the library on that evening. This year our Book Fair is supplied by Scholastic, which provides a great variety of books at reasonable prices. Keep this date free for our Pizza, Pyjamas and Picture Books night, and look out for the order form that will be sent home in the coming weeks.

2. On Wednesday 18th September at 9:00am we will have our book parade in which the children are invited to dress as their favourite book character. This is a fun event enjoyed by all.

Throughout that week, the Book Fair will be operating, so find a time that suits you to come along and browse. If you are unable to come to the school, we have a “wish list” system in which the students can write which book they would like to purchase. Older students will help the younger ones with this task. Hope to see you at some of these fabulous events.

Jenni Goodman, a children's book illustrator who lives locally, will be running workshops with the students on Thursday 26th September.

Mathematical Shops

Some of the Year 1 and Year 2 students recently created their own shops which provide them with a context in which to consider and make informed choices about healthy food choices. The students applied their knowledge of currency and transactions to real-life situations involving addition, subtraction, problem solving and multiplication.

Rest in Peace

Please remember in your prayers the father of Guy Chestney who passed away last Thursday. Our prayer for Guy, Jackie, Sienna, Arielle and Elijah is that they will find some comfort in the happiness that Guy’s dad brought to the family and the memories of him that they will cherish.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.

Can you supply a plate of food?

On Tuesday next week, we will host our first Kindergarten 2020 orientation morning in the hall. It will be a pop-up playgroup . . . a playgroup in the hall in which a lot of the activities will simulate a school. This is always a fun morning. It will be an informal opportunity for the parents of the new Kindergarten students to meet one another over a cup of tea

Are there any parents of this year’s Kindergarten students who might be able to supply a small plate of food for the adults? (We will supply fruit and water for the little ones). Thank you in anticipation.

Keep them Coming In

Thanks to those families who are sending bottle tops from milk bottles, soft drinks bottles and juice bottles. The bottle tops are used to make prosthetic hands for children. The hands can only be made from bottle tops with the recycling code 2 or 4 in a triangle underneath the lid. There is a special bin near the canteen where you may deposit your bottle tops. Thanks to Kate (Year 6) who has organised this initiative.

Canteen Roster

Playgroup Will Relocate For This Week.

As the hall will be used for a school musical rehearsal this Friday, the playgroup will meet at Sharon Koller’s house this Friday morning. Please contact the school if you need to know where Sharon lives. Thanks Sharon.
