Cabra Matters Term 2 Week 2 2019

Principal's Report

Dear Students, Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to Term 2! I hope that you enjoyed a relaxing holiday break and are ready to continue work in another busy term.

You will be aware that our Years 3 and 5 students, along with all other schools in Australia, will do the National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests during the next two weeks. Once again, the tests will be completed using a laptop. The students participated in practice tests using laptops last term. The school values the information provided by NAPLAN to help us highlight areas of learning in which our students are strong and those which require extra support. We use this information to help us plan our teaching and learning programs. Please click on the below link for more information about the Online NAPLAN.

We enjoyed another wonderful Community Day last term which I mentioned in the last newsletter. While this day is a celebration of our vibrant school community, it is also a day to raise funds to be used to support our students. I am very pleased to report that $8,500 was raised which we will use to contribute to the cost of the new umbrellas outside the hall which cost $17,000. Congratulations and thank you to everyone for their hard work.

Our next P and C meeting will be held this TUESDAY, MAY 14 at 9.00 am in the Parent Café. This is a great opportunity for parents and carers to meet each other, find out about what is happening in the school and planning for future activities. We will be holding another Parents excursion this term which we will discuss at the meeting.

You may have noticed that we have a new main entrance to the school in Levuka St. The new entrance provides more direct and easier access to the office. I would like to remind you that, for security reasons, the school gates are closed at 9.30 am and opened at 2.30 pm. The new main gate will be unlocked to allow access.

I am sorry to report that every afternoon we often have up to 8 students who are not collected by an adult. These students are brought to the office at 3.15 pm when staff are required to contact parents and carers to inform them that their children have not been collected. This is not a positive experience for our students as they feel lonely and embarrassed having to wait to be collected. It is also unfair that school staff have to spend extra time locating parents and carers. I ask that all parents and carers ensure that their children are collected on time. If you happen to be unable to collect your children due to an emergency or mishap, please call the office on 9724 1534 so that your children can be informed and cared for.

Teacher supervision of students does not begin until 8.30 am each morning. If any students arrive before 8.30 am they are required to sit in the 3-6 COLA until the 8.30 am bell sounds. I have noticed that a small number of children are arriving much earlier than 8.30 am. If your child needs before and after school care, please contact the office for details of the service that is provided to the school.

I have been very impressed with the students wearing the correct school uniform. They look great! There has been a big improvement in students wearing plain, black shoes, but there are still a significant number of students who are not wearing plain, black shoes. I ask you to buy shoes which meet our uniform requirements.

Last term, we were donated 230 good quality padded chairs from the Powerhouse Museum. These have now been cleaned and are very comfortable to sit on. As a result, we have an excess of the old plastic chairs. These chairs are now available free of charge to our families. If you would like some chairs, please contact the office to arrange collection.

I wish all of our Mother's and Mother figures have had a very happy day on Sunday. I hope that you all got breakfast in bed and a nice massage!! Thank you for all that you do to support your children in their wellbeing and learning.

My best wishes,

Glen Stelzer.
