Springtime in Texas Sky-blue flowers, sapphire, extravagant, dazzling

“The bluebonnet is to Texas what the shamrock is to Ireland, the cherry blossom to Japan, the lily to France, the rose to England and the tulip to Holland.”

From thick rows of sapphire lining the highways, to rolling sky-blue fields, to patches of purple on well-traveled country roads, Texas bluebonnets are EVERYWHERE! - And where there are bluebonnets, there are Indian Paintbrushes and a variety of Texas wildflowers popping up and signaling the arrival of spring.

In the classroom, it's a reminder that we are entering the last quarter of the school year. preparing for STAAR tests and end of course exams, and enjoying the beautiful weather. My students are becoming much better writers, able to use precise and descriptive language, and learning about the power of words. This week we wrote 6-word stories, and began a study of inference, tone, and mood.

In order to fully understand more complex texts, students must understand the use of tone and mood. It is difficult for the second language learner, but regular vocabulary practice, daily reading, and actively connecting with the literature will improve reading fluency and comprehension. These are skills that we will continue to practice in class next week and beyond.

We'll also continue building a class cookbook to end our year, so expect students to be looking for more recipes and traditional favorites. In May, 8th graders will take the Social Studies and Science STAAR tests, where academic language skills and content knowledge will be the key to success. 7th and 6th graders will take the STAAR Reading test, and they will need to be prepared to determine inference, author's purpose, and point of view. With that in mind, we'll be focusing on close reading, vocabulary and more to prepare.

This week, enjoy the beauty of the wildflowers. In Texas, we take great pride in the natural beauty of our great state. The bluebonnets bloom only for a short time, and they'll be gone. There are a few GORGEOUS day trips you might consider taking. From Johnson City to the Willow City Loop, Fredericksburg, Enchanted Rock and Llano, to Marble Falls, Buchanan Dam, and Burnet, Central Texas is bursting with color and you don't want to miss it! Enjoy the days ahead and take a lot of photos along the way!
