A visit to all four theme parks and staying on resort property is the best way to experience Disney World.
A 4-day Park Hopper ticket allows you a day at each park. Staying on property cuts your travel time, and creates a true Disney experience. You'll also enjoy staying on site when in the heat of the day you are a short bus, boat or monorail ride away from your room and pool. Once recharged you can go back out and enjoy the parks at night!

resort choice A: Disney's Contemporary Resort, $4,999
I was recently at this resort and it truly is my favorite. I love that you can walk to the Magic Kingdom, take a boat there and even watch the Magic Kingdom fireworks from the rooftop restaurant. It was one of the first two Disney resorts and I love the history in that. Plus the monorail goes right through the resort, that never gets old!
resort choice B: Disney's Wilderness Lodge, $3,222
Disney's Wilderness Lodge is on my list of places to visit. The North-West theme is what is calling me here, check out this video and see what you think. Plus it makes me think of Katie Thorson and her beautiful home in the north-west.
If you would rather not visit all 4 parks consecutively then I have a few other options I can share, however in my experience tackling WDW Orlando in 4 days and staying right there is actually more relaxing and fun. To truly see all of Disney World you have to visit it over a lifetime, so why not immerse yourself for a few days in Walt's dream and "git 'er done".
This is my recommended guide to Disney.
I also know there is more to offer in Central Florida than just Disney so I have a few link and comments below.
---BEYOND THE PARKS---
Orlando: The City Beautiful <---------------------------------------
Orlando and the surrounding area is pretty neat terrain so you'll want to check it out. Here are some links to places I recommend.
Lake Eola Park is in downtown Orlando and has lots to offer and the fountain in the lake is the symbol of Orlando.
-The Orlando Science Center is 10 minutes from the Kerouac Project
------->Beyond Orlando: Under 30 minutes<-------
Winter Park lies 20 minutes north-east of the Kerouac House and is home to Rawlins College, Tiffany Stained Glass Museum and a super fun for all ages-must-do boat ride.
Springs. Florida has a bunch of springs within a 30 min drive. You can canoe, kayak or go for a boat ride. You will be close to Rock Springs, Blue Springs and others.
-------------------------------------->Beyond Orlando: over 1 hour
Bok Tower hosts a beautiful sounding Singing Tower, gardens and estate dating back to 1929
