Anticipating Butterflies... Nursery term 3a week 4

Excitement is building. Our caterpillars are 'Big Fat Caterpillars' now, which is a well repeated phrase in Nursery. We are wondering what the cocoons will look like, and even more exciting, what the butterflies will look like!

Fortunately, a butterfly expert came to talk to us in school. She was able to tell us about the different species of butterfly common to the UK. This gave us a starting point for our predictions about what our butterflies might look like.

She showed us pictures of common butterflies.
We liked the monarch butterfly best. Some children suggested if we look closely at the caterpillar's skin for colours it could give us clues.
We imagined what the butterflies might look like and painted them. This was done with so much care and attention to detail.
A beautiful symmetrical butterfly.
Another great prediction of what we might see soon!

We are a little fixated on collecting mini-beasts. In maths this week, we've looked at ways of sorting data. We started with a mini-beast picture hunt then put all the finds together. It was a big jumble. Some children naturally began to sort them into groups. The teachers showed everyone how we can organise the groups on to a pictograph to make it easier to compare quantities.

Fiona bug hunting (sadly it was very heavy rain outside!)
Placing the images on to the pictograph.
Comparing how many of each mini-beast we have.
We've been collecting real life mini-beasts too. Heidi showed me a worm she had been carrying around in her pocket so we now have bowls to (temporarily) keep our mini-beasts in.
And in a quiet corner of the classroom... look what we have going on! Some children are showing an interest in learning to read and write. We know 5 sounds so far (m,a,s,d,t) and we are enjoying a little letter formation practise.

Forest school was beautiful sunny day for us. We did a very long walk, the children were overheard planning naps on the bus on the way back to school.

And lastly but most importantly the highlights of our wonderful independent play....

A game of roll the tyres down the hill.
It became a competiton!
Singing nursery rhymes on the stage.
A noisy bunch!
