A Community Gathering Place for Grilling, Playing and Fun with our Dogs

Belle Shain Kennels was founded in 1958 as a competition retriever kennel by Rob Leatherbury. He had 2 black labs, a golden, and a Chesapeake. I was lucky enough to follow in step with Dad and apprenticed under Retriever Hall of Fame trainers Tommy Sorenson (Sorenson Kennels ) and Cotton Pershall (Nilo Kennels). We have trained National Champions and Family Gun Dogs. Along the way we have owned, trained and competed with Irish Wolfhounds, Spinone, Spaniels, Pointers, Setters, Westies, Bassetts, Dachsund, and just about any others that showed up at our doorstep looking for a home. Today we have a lot of variety for various breeds and rescues.

In addition to Board & Train we offer other levels of training in private and group sessions. Frank Leatherbury is a Master level AKC Performance Judge, administers the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program, AKC Community Canine, and AKC Canine Good Citizen Program including the Advanced Levels.

Our Training Guarantee

We used a handshake for over 50 years but today we actually have a contract. Back in 1991 we had a pretty large client base who wanted more training and adventures for themselves and their dogs. We realized that for most of them what they really needed was more training and higher levels of training so that they would behave in social situations with high distraction. Dogs would develop bad habits or know they could get away with a lower level of performance than they left here with. It was then that we decided to GUARANTEE our "Board and Train" levels of training. If you are a board and train client we know you are looking for something more with your dog. You expect more from your dog and yourself, even your family so we began our "Saturday Morning Tune Up" program. You dog is guaranteed to perform at the level we trained them, for the life of your dog. This is backed up by our SMTU program because we know what happens in families who are busy with life, other family members, and their activities. At BelleShain, we are truly all about DOG.

Looking for an evaluation or Introduction to training for your dog? Our SMTU Program is the place to start. You can also make an appointment at a convenient time during the week. ALL evaluations and introductory classes are FREE.

Day Camp

Days at Belle Shain are all about exercise and adventure! We advise a few manners along the way. We like to play outdoors, take woodland walks, explore trails, and visit the river and Splash Club. When not exploring we are generally outdoors in a 1 acre day yard with plenty of room to play, shady trees, and plenty of snacks and water. Try our Fi Collars to find out just how many steps your dog gets while at play. We are sure it is more than usual and they will be ready to rest when they get home!
