There is no obligation for you to Register Your Dog. It may answer a lot of your questions on what we offer. We think the process is fairly simple but PLEASE LET US KNOW! Our belief and business philosophy is that "Critical Thinking leads to Continual Improvement" Click on button below. We generally stay open for visits 7am - 6pm. Appointments are required. Remember we are on 34 acres and most often out playing and training with your dogs.

Day Camp

Days at Belle Shain are all about exercise and adventure! We advise a few manners along the way. We like to play outdoors, take woodland walks, explore trails, and visit the river and Splash Club. When not exploring we are generally outdoors, age and personality appropriate, in one of 3 day yards from small to extra large areas up to the 1 acre day yard with plenty of room to play, shady trees, and plenty of snacks and water. Try our Fi Collars to find out just how many steps your dog gets while at play. We are sure it is more than usual and they will be ready to rest when they get home!

Boarding

Boarding and longer stays at BelleShain offer many opportunities for adventure, exercise, manners, and Fun! From Boating, Kayak, Paddleboarding, Frisbee, Tennis balls, picnics, and Sandbar Club there is something for everyone. To view current offerings please login in below or Register

Training

Belle Shain Kennels was founded in 1958 as a competition retriever kennel by Rob Leatherbury. He had 2 black labs, a golden, and a Chesapeake. I was lucky enough to follow in step with Dad and apprenticed under Retriever Hall of Fame trainers Tommy Sorenson (Sorenson Kennels ) and Cotton Pershall (Nilo Kennels). We have trained National Champions and Family Gun Dogs. Along the way we have also owned, trained and competed with Irish Wolfhounds, Spinone, Spaniels, Pointers, Setters, Westies, Bassetts, Dachsund, and just about any others that showed up at our doorstep looking for a home. Today we have a lot of variety for various breeds and rescues.

In addition to Board & Train we offer other levels of training in private and group sessions. Frank Leatherbury is a Master level AKC Performance Judge, administers the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program, AKC Community Canine, and AKC Canine Good Citizen Program including the Advanced Levels.

Our Training Guarantee

We used a handshake for over 50 years but today we actually have a contract. Back in 1991 we had a pretty large client base who wanted more training and adventures for themselves and their dogs. We realized that for most of them what they really needed was more training and higher levels of training so that they would behave in social situations with high distraction. Dogs would develop bad habits or know they could get away with a lower level of performance than when they left here. Oftentimes it was young families and lack of time in a disciplined environment. Needs refocused for the owner. It was then that we decided to GUARANTEE our "Board and Train" levels of training. If you are a board and train client we know you are looking for something more with your dog. You expect more from your dog and yourself, even your family, so we began our "Saturday Morning Tune Up" ( SMTU ) program. You dog is guaranteed to perform at the level we trained them, for the life of your dog. This is backed up by our Saturday Morning Tune Up (SMTU) program because we know what happens in families who are busy with life, other family members, and their activities. At BelleShain, we are truly all about DOG FAMILY.

Looking for an evaluation or Introduction to training for your dog? Our SMTU Program is the place to start. You can also make an appointment at a convenient time during the week. ALL evaluations and introductory classes are FREE. You may schedule a visit using the button below.

Retrieving Hope Foundation

Looking to make a difference in a dogs life? We have quite a few that are never on a timeline to find a home. Many have stayed here for a lifetime. If we can find them a very good home with lots of family time then that is even better! People started dropping them off back in the 50's; then the 90's came and there were more. We worked with Frank Burt, a concerned Baldwin County Commissioner to help improve the Baldwin County Facility. Then in the mid 2000's Toni Roberts convinced us that a facility was needed in Bay Minette so we again assisted along with others in donating the site where the North Baldwin Animal Shelter is now located. It is unfortunate but now in 2020 the need is greater than ever before. We continue to keep our rescues here for their lifetime.
