Belle Shain Kennels was founded in 1958 as a competition retriever kennel by Rob Leatherbury. He had 2 black labs, a golden, and a Chesapeake. I was lucky enough to follow in step with Dad and apprenticed under Retriever Hall of Fame trainers Tommy Sorenson (Sorenson Kennels ) and Cotton Pershall (Nilo Kennels). We have trained National Champions and Family Gun Dogs. Along the way we have owned, trained and competed with Irish Wolfhounds, Spinone, Spaniels, Pointers, Setters, Westies, Bassetts, Dachsund, and just about any others that showed up at our doorstep looking for a home. Today we have a lot of variety for various breeds and rescues.
In addition to Board & Train we offer other levels of training in private and group sessions. Frank Leatherbury is a Master level AKC Performance Judge, administers the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program, AKC Community Canine, and AKC Canine Good Citizen Program including the Advanced Levels.
Days at Belle Shain are all about exercise and adventure! We advise a few manners along the way. We like to play outdoors, take woodland walks, explore trails, and visit the river and Splash Club. When not exploring we are generally outdoors in a 1 acre day yard with plenty of room to play, shady trees, and plenty of snacks and water. Try our Fi Collars to find out just how many steps your dog gets while at play. We are sure it is more than usual and they will be ready to rest when they get home!
