Shakespeare's influence on today's society

THESIS: Shakespeare influenced the world the world through his literature, plays and his change on the structure of theaters.

INFLUENCE IN LITERATURE

Quote #1:"There has been a great variety of critical approach to Shakespeare's work since his death" ("William")

Commentary:This quote shows that many writers of the modern society have been inspired to learn about his writing and to find out what the true meaning of his literature was.He influenced the world by inspiring writers and changing how writers write stories and poems to this day.

Quote #2:"The First Folio, which appeared in 1623 after Shakespeare’s death, contained a number of poems praising Shakespeare" (Lander).

Commentary:This quote shows that Shakespeare's writing was priceless back then and his writing was the best of his time. Shakespeare influenced the world by opening the eyes of society and making writing popular, especially in his time.

Quote #3:"Shakespeare was both admired and condemned...For instance, charges against his moral propriety were made by Samuel Johnson in the 18th cent. and by George Bernard Shaw in the 20th" ("William").

Commentary:This quote shows that for Shakespeare's literature was both appraised and hated for its controversy. He influenced the world with his outlandish works by mixing together different genres of poetry and literature together in one book or story.

INFLUENCE ON PLAYS

Quote #4:"The strength of Shakespeare's plays lies in the absorbing stories they tell" ("William").

Commentary:The quote shows that people are still thinking into Shakespeare's plays and it shows that people are still moved by his stories that are told on the stage. It also shows that Shakespeare influenced the world by changing the way a play is told on stage.

Quote #5:"Shakespeare shaped the borrowed material with such genius that he produced a work of art that was uniquely different from its source" (Lander).

Commentary:This quote shows that Shakespeare used his literary skills to create amazing plays that have influenced his era. Shakespeare influenced the world by making plays so popular, especially in his era and even into our modern time.

Quote #6:"Henry V has attracted many great English actors who starred as the king. They include Charles Kean in the 1800’s and Kenneth Branagh, Richard Burton, Ian Holm, Laurence Olivier, and Ralph Richardson in the 1900’s" (Siedel).

Commentary:This quote shows that his plays were very popular and that he had the most popular actors to play in his plays. He influenced the world with the actors he use in his plays and made acting a real profession.

CHANGE IN THEATER STRUCTURE

Quote #7:"Globe Theatre was an early open-air English theater in London...The Globe was round or polygonal on the outside and probably round on the inside" (Seidel).

Commentary:This quote shows that since Shakespeare's time the theater has changed a lot from an open aired area with a station all sides to an indoor area with a stage at the front on the room. This influenced the world because without the reconstruction of the Globe Theatre there might not have been the type of theater we have today.

Quote #8:"The theater may have held as many as 3,000 spectators. Its stage occupied the open-air space, with a pit in front for standing viewers" (Seidel).

Commentary:This quote shows that his theater was very different from the ones we have today. Shakespeare influenced the world by changing the layout of his theater which later influenced the modern theaters we have today.

Quote #9:"The stage was surrounded by several levels of seating. In 1613, the Globe burned down. It was rebuilt on the same foundation and reopened in 1614" (Seidel).

Commentary:This quote shows that originally the theater had multilevel, all around seating. Shakespeare influenced the world by changing it over time to what is is today, multileveled, one direction seating.

Quote #10:"17th-century London theatre, octagonal and open to the sky, near Bankside, Southwark, where many of Shakespeare's plays were performed by Richard Burbage and his company" ("Globe").

Commentary:This quote shows that the shape of the theater was very different than what it is now. Shakespeare influenced the world with is structural ideas as well as inspirations to other architects.
