OLIVER TWIST by p.stebbings and E.TESSIER-LAVIGNE, based on the novel by c.dickens original score by thomas johnson

Oliver Twist has been described as the first modern novel. It is one of the few novels whose characters have entered into modern myth- Fagin, Bill, Nancy and the Artful Dodger can claim to be some of the best known literary creations outside of Shakespeare. The enormous energy of these characters and the full-blooded portrait of the first modern urban nightmare, London, make the story not only exciting and dramatic, but also truly contemporary. The themes and social issues raised by Dickens are as relevant today as when it was first published over one hundred and fifty years ago. The central theme is the link between poverty and crime. Beyond that it explores the way society treats its weakest members. Dickens’ style is highly theatrical, and indeed he himself gave dramatic readings of much of OLIVER TWIST to huge audiences in Britain and the USA. Dickens’ style switches between the almost documentary to the comic, from action packed narrative to emotional drama. TNT sweeps away the sentimentality of so many versions and present the story through the eyes of Fagin as he stands on the gallows awaiting execution. The story is his last attempt at justifying his life of crime. The audience too must answer if he was indeed at fault. Is he a criminal or a victim? Does he care for his boy thieves or does he exploit them?

Stebbings' production gives students like Ko a chance to appreciate theater that is both entertaining and thought- provoking.” The Japan Times – Oliver Twist (in Japan)

“TNT has explored the novel through music. Thomas Johnson created the original music for the play” from Shangai Daily.com – Oliver Twist (in China)

"The acting was exceptional, more so as the select few actors portrayed the many different characters and were so convincing in each part they played.Overall I think the play would be different to what many of the audience expected but it still held you in its grip as these brilliant actors gave a stunning performance of something completely different. Christine Gaskell life of grime: TNT (Europe) offered a dark version of the tale of Oliver Twist - Manx Independent

A brilliant adaptation of Dickens‘ work, where the actors impress, not just with the command of their voices and strong expression. The easy use of gesture and facial expression gave life to the in any case dynamic plot and took away the moralistic gravity. Roaring applause for high quality, committed theatre on a small stage. Elisabeth Bracker (Lehr - Germany)

The „Kammgarn“ was nearly sold out last Friday. Although many probably already know Charles Dickens‘ novel „Oliver Twist“, some decided to treat themselves to the classic in drama form. Fordirector Paul Stebbings and Phil Smith have transformed the literary model into an exciting 90- minute theatre format.„What, only five actors?“ an astonished spectator voiced at the final applause. Actually, every member of the TNT-theatre group took on some two to four parts, all carefully differentiated. The a- cappella songs, too, were impressive as well as expressive and contributed largely to the mood of the evening. All in all a poignant, classically performed and very well acted performance.Barbara Achermann (Schaffausen - Switzerland)

An “English lesson” of a special kind. No dictionary is necessary to understand it. by Anneliese Griebler (Bergisch Gladbach – Germany)

Oliver Twist in the original language – a well-disposed theatre troupe offered an experience not just for anglophiles – Lippische Landeszeitung

Writer Charles Dickens filled about 500 pages with his “Oliver Twist”, inventing some 50 characters. In the brilliant stage version by TNT Theatre the novel takes only five actors and less than two hours’ time. The audience in the Kreßlesmühle experienced a brilliant night of theatre. (...) t was astonishing what an incredible theatrical atmosphere was created on the diminutive stage in the Kreßlesmühle. (...) Crowning glory of the night were the songs commenting the action with occasionally saucy lyrics. (...) The upshot is: We were very much amused.
