How to Save a Life By: The Fray
The song How to Save a life is a song to represent Holden's younger brother who has passed. The message of this song is a melancholy one in which the narrator seems to be regretful of losing a friend from not being able to help them. "As he goes left, and you stay right: Between the lines of fear and blame; You begin to wonder why you came". Theses lines explain how the narrator was trying to help their friend and how his friend seems to not see his help, so he wonders why he even try's to help him in the first place. In the book Holden says "He got leukemia and died when we were up in Maine, on July 18, 1946"(Salinger 38). This line shows how Holden could not do anything to help Allie because he could not cure his leukemia when Allie got it.
Come Out and Play By: The OffSpringe
I choose this song because when The Offspring says "You gotta keep 'em separated" this reminds me about the shower curtain that separates Holden and Stradlaters room from Ackleys room. When The Offspring says that line they mean to have the people they are talking about to be separated because of the violence that might happen. In the book Holden says "He could hear me all right through the shower curtains, but he didn't answer me right away"(Salinger 36). Because the shower curtain does not muffle any sounds its just like there is nothing there.
Chasing Cars By: Snow Patrol
Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol is a perfect fit for the Catcher in the Rye because this song is about different persons, and unmeaningful things in our lives. It talks about how people don't have enough time to be doing nothing. "Let's waste time , Chasing cars," this line is describing how everyone needs sometime to start doing something for them self's instead of doing something that is a benefit for other people. In the book Holden says "I wrote Stradlater's composition about"(Salinger 39). So Holden did Stradlater's compostion for him he did not have time to do something for him self because he is always doing something to benefit someone else like Stradlater.
Another Brick in the Wall By: Pink Floyd
Another Brick in the Wall fits the first chapter of The Catcher in The Rye. This song revolves around students that want their teachers to leave them alone. the song keeps repeating "We don't need no education... Teachers leave them kids alone". Holden has been kicked out from numerous colleges and these lyrics are probably something he would be thinking his mind as he analyzes his terrible situation. "Where I want to start telling is the day I left Pencey prep"(Salinger 2). He says this because he got kicked out of school because he was failing so many classes so he starts telling his story here because he wants to tell people about his life where he started in school.
Scientists By: ColdPlay
I Choose this song because it relates to Holden's relationship with Allie. Although the song is more of a song that has to do with a romantic love, it still shows the feeling of Holden's love for Allie. In the song the lines "Nobody said it was easy, It such a shame for us to part, Nobody said it was easy, No one ever said it would be this hard, Oh, take me back to the start." Theses lines relates to Holden missing Allie all the time and sometimes he turns towards him for support and company. In the Catcher in the Rye Holden says "I slept in the garage the night he died, and I broke all the goddamn windows with my fist, just for the hell of it"(Salinger 39). Holden did this because of how much he cared about his brother even though he got all the attention he still love him.
