The story of Baek-Woon Mountain Hut
Baek-Woon Mountain Hut is the cradle of Korean mountaineering culture.
The hut, where Hae-Moon Lee(1st generation) 1924, has been a living witness, together with millions of mountaineers, watching the Korean mountaineering history over the past ninety years, Nam-soo, Lee(2nd generation) built a stone-hut under the government permission in 1933, and dug a well in 1942. he hut was extended mostly by the Corean Alpine Club in 1947, and partially destroyed during the Korean War.
Seoul Alpine Association members and other mountaineers re-enlarges it into a one-story stone building in 1960. After the roof was burnt down in 1992. Young-Goo, Lee(3rd generation) and some mountaineers built its second story by logs, which completed the hut as it is. Whenever carious accidents happened at insoo-Bong, including the ones in 1971 and 1983, this hut used to be a command post. Baek-Woon Mountain Hut, the first and oldest one in Korea, is the homeland of Korean mountaineers as well as the cradle of Korean mountaineering culture. This hut should be kept and preserved, because it is the modern cultural heritage of Mountain Bukhan.
