Harry Truman

Harry S. Truman became president after Roosevelt died in 1945. The 1949 Inauguration was the first to be nationally televised, and was estimated to have been viewed by 10 million Americans. He was responsible for dropping the atomic bombs on Hiroshima & Nagasaki.

-trivia fact, Truman's nick name was"Give 'em hell Harry!"-

Being the president when Billy Joel was born is why Truman kicks off the song, "We Didn't Start the Fire"

If it wasn't for Truman, WWII may of still kept going on and the US wouldn't of been what it is today.


Marilyn Montoe

Actress and Pin-up girl. Married Joe DiMaggio in 1954. She died of a drug overdose in 1956. Popular Movies: Some Like It Hot and Bus Stop.

-Trivia fact, she studied literature at UCLA-

She was an iconic actress and model leading her to be in Billy Joel's song, and still today she is known and recognized as one of the most iconic women.



First tested in 1951. This weapon was more powerful than the destructive Atomic bomb. Researched by Edward Teller as a response to the fear of communism after Russia duplicated the A-bomb.

-Trivia fact,it was United State's first World thermonuclear weapon-

It was included in the song "We Didn't Start the Fire" because it was newly developed and it was the first hydrogen bomb to be tested.

The h-bomb lead to the invention of the thermal nuclear weapons used today.


Dwight D. Eisenhower

First elected as President of the United States, winning by a landslide margin of 442 to 89 electoral votes. Making him the 34th U.S. president (1953-1961), and was an allied European military leader.

-Trivia Fact, His nickname was "Ike"-

Known as the man who beat Hitler, the man who had become the nation’s image in one of the grand plebiscites. This is why Billy Joel put him in his song.


Communist Bloc

The uprising of 1953 in East Germany is crushed by the Volkspolizei and the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany. Refers to the countries that comprised the "enemy" during the Cold War.

-Trivia Fact, Poland was part of the Communist Bloc-

Today there are still countries that have a communism government, like China, Cuba, Laos, North Korea, and Vietnam, ect.


"Rock Around the Clock"

Number 1 song by Bill Haley and the Comets,spurring worldwide interest in rock and roll music.Considered the beginning of Rock n' Roll.

-trivia fact,In the UK, this was the biggest-selling single of the 50's-

This song basically started rock leading to so many popular rock songs today like, Heathens, Still Breathing, etc. this is way Billy probably put this song in he song.


Albert Eisenstein

Physicist and mathematician who penned the Theory of Relativity and did substantial work on the creation of the Atomic Bomb. He won the Nobel Prize before passing away on April 18, 1955.

-trivia fact,Albert Einstein was offered the chance to serve as President of Israel, but did not accept-

Albert's work helped contributed to important advance in science such as space exploration, applications of light and atomic energy. His theories led scientists to understand new ways to look at energy, matter, gravity, space and time. An important man like him would be needed to be included in Billy's song,



Alabama is the site of the Montgomery Bus Boycott which ultimately led to the removal of the last race laws in the USA. Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr figure prominently.

-trivia fact, In 1955, African Americans were still required by a Montgomery, Alabama, city ordinance to sit in the back half of city buses and to yield their seats to white riders-

This really made a change in the world. Today we no long have segregation of blacks and whites and help make the world an equal place for everyone no matter the race.


Mickey Mantle

NY Yankees outfielder (1951-58). Won the AL Triple Crown in '56 and held the record for 536 home runs. He was a 3 time MVP and was entered into the Hall of Fame in '74.

-trivia fact, His nickname was "The Commerce Comet"-

Mickey impacted society by his actions on the field.



Was a Lebanese political crisis caused by political and religious tensions in the country that included a U.S. military intervention. The intervention lasted around three months until President Camille Chamoun, who had requested the assistance, completed his term as president of Lebanon.

-trivia fact,"Ike" sent troops to Lebanon where 241 marines died.-

There is still much of this going on with the religious tensions.


Buddy Holly

Singer/songwriter of Buddy Holly and the Crickets. Died in a plane crash with 4 other rock n' roll singers on Feb 3, 1959.

-trivia fact, He was voted the 13th Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Artist of all time by Rolling Stone-

The day of his death was said to be "...the day music died".The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, the Byrds, Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend and Bruce Springsteen all freely admit they began to play only after Buddy taught them how. He was able to influence such famous artist into becoming singers, without him we may of not had the hit songs we have today.

Joel prefaces the lyric with a Holly signature vocal hiccup: "Uh-huh, uh-huh."


John F. Kennedy

John F. Kennedy. 36th President of the United States (1961-1963). The first Roman Catholic President.

Former Nazi leader and most feared Nazi. He was in charge of Hitler's Death Camps. He escaped to Argentine in 1946 and was captured by Israelis in 1960. Tried in 1961 and hanged in 1962 for his war crimes.

-trivia fact, Eichmann was a travelling salesman before he was a Nazi-

Eichmann was responsible for the mass slaughter of millions of Jews and deserved what he got coming.
