The History of Fantasy Sports Summer Wilson

Wilfred "Bill" Wikenbach

Fantasy sports have been around for quite some time now. The concept of picking players and running a contest based on their year-to-date stats has been around since shortly after this World War II. Wilfred "Bill" Winkenbach devised fantasy golf in the latter part of the 1950s. In 1962. Wikenbach also started the trend of fantasy football in 1962. After this, fantasy sports grew more and more from there.

Rather than using statistics for seasons whose outcomes were already known, the owners would have to make similar predictions about players' playing time, health, and expected performance that real baseball managers must make. This is known as Rotisserie League Baseball. The so-called Rotisserie scoring system was essentially established by the Chicago Baseball League, founded in 1978 by Ivan R. Dee and others.

Fantasy sports journalists strive to promote and acknowledge the hard work and dedication shown by fantasy sports participants. The FSWA (Fantasy Sports Writers Association specifically represents journalists who only cover fantasy sports. These journalists have helped to spread the word about stats and leaderboards to extend the knowledge of fantasy sports to the general sports-watching public.

Fantasy sports emerged in the market in the year 1962. They began with fantasy football which is credited to Wilfred "Bill" Wikenbach for starting it.

The fantasy football industry is worth nearly seventy billion dollars. Not only is it worth this major amount of money, but it is continuously growing. Americans spend $467 per person or about $15 billion in total playing. Roughly, 11 billion flows toward football. These figures don’t count ad revenue for fantasy hosting sites. The NFL’s annual revenue falls just under $10 billion currently

A couple issues with fantasy football include: sample sizes being too small, roles in football tend to be more fluid than for say in baseball, and finally, fantasy football and reality tend to get in the way of one another.

Managing a dream team of real players could get some betting fans in hot water with the authorities. In states where high-stakes fantasy sports technically falls under the definition of prohibited gambling, players could be risking more than their pride. Much of the confusion over the legality of operating and participating in fantasy league-land centers on murky state gaming laws clashing with broad federal policies. Some groups want to put an end o fantasy football websites because of this.

The internet expanded the popularity of fantasy sports by making it easier for groups of people to participate in it. When it is all web-based, you have the opportunity of allowing more people to connect with your fantasy league. The internet has expanded people's knowledge on fantasy football as well and that makes them want to participate in it even more.

The FSTA is known as the Fantasy Sports Trade Commission. It is the most comprehensive resource for and the official association of the fantasy sports industry. Since 1998, Fantasy Sports Trade Association (FSTA) has served as the voice of the industry and this media kit is an extension of our more than 15 years of service to fantasy sports. The FSTA is the voice for over 57 million fantasy sports players in the United States and Canada, and for the companies that provide services, news, information and competition to support this growing industry.

One main problem that arises with the growth of fantasy sports teams is that it is not always legal. The player in fantasy sports are technically "gambling", which is illegal in most states. Fantasy sports have grown so rapidly that it is not as easy to stop as one would think. Another problem that arises from fantasy sports leagues would be the difference between reality and fantasy. Some people take it too seriously, when truthfully, it is just fantasy.

The enthusiasm for fantasy sports can be explained as one similar to a little kid in a candy shop: You get into the shop, see all of the choices you have, get a few of the ones you want, but then are bummed when they do not have the main thing you wanted. Fantasy sports are similar because the members are all very excited once they first start, but then slowly get less excited when they see they are not winning how they predicted. However, that is the risk the players take.

The ethical dilemma behind making a website payment for a fantasy sports team is that gambling begins to take place. People take advantage of others when they plan to participate because they are able to gamble their chances of winning the league.

The media has been impacted by fantasy sports because they have more than just actual sports teams to cover now. They also have to cover the effect of fantasy leagues during the season to highlight the precautions of it and the leaderboards. Another way media has been impacted is in the sense that fantasy sports are becoming more popular than the teams. The fun of fantasy will always be there, but the fun of an actual game seems to be slipping away from the public.

Athletes have been affected by fantasy sports because they have taken the lime-light away from them. Fantasy sports have become such a widespread hobby for people because they enjoy the risk of it all. Teams have been impacted by fantasy sports for the same reason. One thing that fantasy sports have done for athletes is bring the attention back to them because they become more popular when people continuously pick them for their fantasy team.

I see the fantasy sports industry continuing to grow rapidly as our generation gets older. However, I do see there being some legal issues down the road that cause issues for fantasy sports team participants. The fantasy sports industry has just started evolving into what everyone hoped it would be and it causes excitement for those who partake in it.

The target market for fantasy sports would be younger people in their late teens and early twenties. This is the target market because they are the most interested in sports. Also, the target market tends to involve more men because they are more interested in sports and they enjoy gambling more so than women.
