49ers Foundation Newsletter March 2021

49ers Foundation

Happy March, Faithful!

The 49ers organization is deep into free agency and we're anxiously counting down the days to the 2021 NFL Draft.

While the team has been busy preparing to get back on the field, the 49ers Foundation has been active in supporting communities throughout the Bay Area, especially children and families furthest from resources and opportunities. The 49ers organization also recently recognized National Girls and Women In Sports Day as well as International Women's Day, celebrating the women paving the way in pushing our sport forward.

We hope you enjoy our March Newsletter that highlights an exclusive virtual trivia experience with Joe Staley and Mike McGlinchey, a 49ers Foundation supporter and Super-Fan spotlight, our direct service programs 49ers EDU presented by Chevron and 49ers PREP presented by U.S. Bank celebrating Women's History Month, how to nominate a teacher for the Dr. Harry Edwards "Follow Your Bliss" Award presented by Extra Yard for Teachers and Micron Technology, Inc., and much more!

Thank you for your continued support this off-season to the 49ers Foundation and your commitment to Bay Area youth and beyond!

In Case You Missed It - Trivia with Joe Staley & Mike McGlinchey

49ers Foundation supporter Julie, along with her friends Rachel and Veronica recently took on 49ers legend Joe Staley and 49ers tackle Mike McGlinchey in a virtual trivia showdown. They won the exclusive opportunity at 49ers Foundation's Kickoff: Players for a Purpose and while Staley took home the Trivia Challenge title, it was a spirited competition with plenty of laughs shared throughout the battle.

Dig for Gold Spotlight: Annie Santiago

Annie is a 49ers super-fan who proudly shows her passion for the team by sporting her sideline worn gear and blowing up social media with dream experiences - all won through the 49ers Foundation's Dig for Gold auctions. Annie's Kyle Shanahan Super Bowl pack and Joe Staley's sideline gear pack are high on her list of favorites. The pre-game sideline experience during the 2019 Playoffs vs. Minnesota was her all-time favorite package she has won from Dig for Gold. Not only because of the win and opportunity to see 49ers greats up close, but she also got to experience it with her mom, who Annie considers the second greatest fan behind herself. It was a memory that will last a lifetime! It's hard for Annie to imagine anything better than the 2019 experiences shared with her mom, sister, Aunt Neta, and Calvin, but her excitement about what lies ahead in the Dig for Gold auctions for the 49ers 2021 campaign keeps this Faithful Fan going.

49ers Open Applications for the Dr. Harry Edwards "Follow Your Bliss" Award Grant

The San Francisco 49ers Foundation and its award-winning 49ers EDU program announced that applications have opened for the Dr. Harry Edwards “Follow Your Bliss” Award grant. This year’s application will focus on highlighting teachers who have gone above and beyond in the face of COVID-19 and distance learning. The 49ers Foundation, Extra Yard for Teachers and Micron Technology, Inc. are excited to recognize the dedication and hard work of teachers that often go unnoticed.

The application for this year’s grants will put an emphasis on all that teachers have had to endure throughout the pandemic, and the winners we are seeking this year will have done that and also maintained the adherence to our most important criteria – inspiring youth via passion, connection to community and support both inside and outside of the classroom.

Each of the five awardees will receive a $5,000 stipend for in-classroom or digital materials and other necessary resources for the 2021 – 2022 academic year, mentorship from Dr. Edwards for the recipients and his or her fellow educators, and formal recognition at a virtual 49ers event with family and colleagues. The nomination/application window for the 2021 Dr. Harry Edwards Follow Your Bliss Award is now open. Click here for more information.

A Look Back: 49ers and Play Like A Girl

Since the 49ers launched their EDU program in 2014, players, coaches and 49ers front office staff have volunteered their time as guest teachers with the program helping students K-8 build 21st century skills and foundational STEAM knowledge to better prepare them as future leaders of their communities. The success of the EDU program led the 49ers to launch EDU Academy, an education consulting venture, in 2017 to carry forward the mission of 49ers EDU by working with like-minded organizations to help young students establish a stronger connection with STEAM through sport.

In 2019, EDU Academy announced a partnership with Play Like a Girl (PLAG) to introduce a STEAM education curriculum to PLAG female youth. PLAG is the only 501(c)3 charitable organization in the nation providing high-impact STEAM and sports programs to girls in a supportive environment. EDU Academy took PLAG through a strategic planning process to build a standard-aligned curriculum with a specific pedagogical focus on project-based learning and 21st century learning skills.

Inside the Oval: Sofy Navarro, 49ers EDU Senior Manager

In the eleventh episode of "Inside the Oval" presented by Dignity Health, Sofy Navarro discussed the day-to-day responsibilities of her role, tips for setting up an at-home workspace, how coming from a family of educators influenced her career path, why she loves working with Dr. Harry Edwards on the Follow Your Bliss grants and her favorite memories as a member of the 49ers organization.
