Symbols in The Scarlet Letter By Verona.Y. Alicia.M. Cathy.l.

Symbols:

"Pearl put up her mouth, and kissed the scarlet letter too"(189).

1. Pearl:

From preview chapters, Pearl has always valued Hester and the Scarlet Letter. She is intrigued by it. In the book, Hester realized that "the child's own nature had something wrong in it which continually betokened that she had been born amiss-- the effluence of her mother's lawless passion" (156). She knows Pearl is not simply a baby, but the symbol of her sin.

"...Many people refused to interpret the scarlet 'A' by its original signification. They said it meant 'Able'; so strong was Hester Prynne, with a woman's strength" (152).

2. Letter A

"A" represents "Adultery", but instead, people give this letter a different interpretation of "Able". Over the years, people have changed their mind and view of Hester. They are tired about chasing who is Hester's "secret lover" and condemning her for her sins. They now think of Hester as kind and friendly to everyone. Her sin is covered by her innate character and she is now free to pursue her true love, Dimmesdale.

“The sunshine does not love you. It runs away and hide itself, because it is afraid of something on your bosom…let me run and catch it. I am but a child. It will not run away from me…” (160).

3. Sunshine

Sunshine represents her true love for Dimmesdale, which is considered a sin. The sunshine represents both Hester's love for Dimmesdale and the sin that comes along with it. She is upset that "it runs away and hide itself." She hopes that she and Dimmesdale could be together one day. She falls in love with Dimmesdale and chooses to commit adultery, though she knows that she will considered an outcast in the community. Pearl wants to catch it, because she is the product of Hester's love and sin. Hester's love and sin are intertwined.
