Dr. Lily Matos DeBlieux, Pendergast District Superintendent, and Gina Godbehere, Bureau Chief in the Community Based Prosecution Division, were selected for the Valle del Sol Profile of Success 2019 Latino Advocacy Champion Award, and the Center of the Future of Arizona’s (CFA) Gabe Zimmerman Civic Leader Award, respectively. The CFA award is named in honor of Gabe, who lost his life on January 8, 2011 while serving the citizens of Arizona at a constituent outreach event. Honorees are recognized by the Center at the annual Arizona City/County Management Association luncheon in July. Presented each September, the Profiles of Success Hispanic Leadership Awards Celebration recognizes Latino leadership. The luncheon launches National Hispanic Heritage Month in Arizona.
Both women, co-founders of the Speak Up, Stand Up, Save a Life Conference, dedicate countless volunteer hours to this cause they both deeply believe in. The two met during Leadership West Class XXIV and as a class final project, co-founded the Speak Up, Stand Up, Save a Life Movement in 2017. Now in its third year, over 5,000 students, counselors, law enforcement, parents, and education advocates came together at Grand Canyon University in January 2019 to eradicate the stigma and consequences of bullying and to prevent teen suicide. Due to their efforts to help Arizona be a better place for this and future generations, 38 school districts participated with a total of 158 schools.
The daylong event inspired attendees to connect and create lasting solutions they can implement back at their schools. What makes this free youth conference unique is the innovative speakers, and the outreach offered to the adults. This amazing movement has touched almost 400,000 lives throughout the state.
