CRANBROOK V WHITSTABLE SATURDAY 2ND MARCH 2019, KICK OFF 3.00PM, SANDS PITCH

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES 2ND MARCH 2019

Today we welcome not one but two Whitstable teams. This is an excellent opportunity to watch both the first team and the Nomads and we welcome your support at the Tomlin ground today. We also welcome Andy Bishop and Jonathan Wright as our referees.

Cranbrook XV continue to be unbeaten in this calendar year following a nervy win against Footscray in a double header of league and Salver. The Salver semi-final will be against Southwark and will again be a double header at home on the 6th of April (last club lunch of the year). The Nomads have only lost one game this year. A superb win against Sevenoaks 34–20 in their last outing was a great effort. The ladies sadly lost against Heathfield last Sunday, but this cannot detract from their wonderful season so far.

Last Sunday we hosted the Kent under 20s match against Sussex which Kent won 40–33. With thanks to Mark Scott and his team the pitch looked fantastic and Kent have confirmed that they will be returning next season for one of their home matches. Sadly, we could not provide ball boys for the match, but we will try and remedy that next time.

Tomorrow our under 16 team is playing a very important Kent Plate match against Dartfordians at 11 am and at 2pm our ladies are playing against Hove.

I attended with other members of the club the funeral of Derrick Martin. Derrick‘s daughter described in the eulogy her father’s love for the club and what he did for the club including organising the building of the first clubhouse and the extension in 1970. Derrick was a frequent attender at club lunches, and he is much missed.

Tomorrow also at 11 am our architects are attending the club to give a view on the design of the new clubhouse, and all are welcome to attend to discuss the design and any thoughts upon the proposed new clubhouse.

I am delighted to report that Debbie Man is now the coaching coordinator and the volunteer coordinator for the club and is a very welcome addition to the committee. Lois Dignan is doing sterling work with the fixtures for the mini section and is also now the harlequins liaison officer. As ever we are still looking for more volunteers.
