CVQO Westminster Award 2018 South Africa trip blog - Day 1 Bradley Gunn, 295 (Witham & Rivenhall) Squadron ATC

Today we travelled to Johannesburg to start our adventure, it was an 11 hour plane journey followed by a 5 hour minibus ride to Camp Elandsheim where we are to stay the next 3 nights.

After the interesting drive, during which we saw controlled burning (Reggie, our guide for the upcoming Battlefield Tours, told us that this is done to prevent wildfires) and also learned about the history of the Zulus and diamond mining in South Africa, we took part in some team activities.

We had a proper introduction to Devin, our expedition leader, and then went straight into an assault course where we had to navigate across a muddy river, crawl under a cam net through the mud where we got a lot wetter than predicted, but bonded the team well - everyone is now tired and ready for day 2.

And watching the Croatia vs England match! *

* Sadly it's not coming home this time...
