Slam Dunk Book Challenge Guide How do you dunk? (It's for a great cause!)

What's a Slam Dunk Book, you ask?

Do you remember the first book you ever read that made you think, "Wow, now that was awesome!"? That's what we call a slam dunk book, and a sad fact is that thousands of students in our metro have so little access to books that they might not discover one of these stories that turn many of us into lifelong readers.

Leading up to Giving Tuesday, November 27th, we're challenging our community to participate in the Slam Dunk Book Challenge to raise money for Book Trust, a literacy program in 10 local Title 1 schools.

About Book Trust: Students receive a monthly $7 book budget they use to choose and order books they love. At the end of the year they have between 20-30 books to call their own, which helps build their home libraries, improve literacy skills, and develop a lifelong love for reading. Learn more here.

Step 1: Donate $7 (or more if you like)

Step 2: Come up with your slam dunk book challenge idea.

Don't worry, you don't have to be a pro basketball player to participate. Here are some examples to get you thinking.

It seems dunk tanks are local president/CEOs Gail DeBoer of Cobalt Credit Union and Tim Burke's of OPPD preferred slam dunk book challenge method. :)

And some special Thanksgiving/food-themed ideas...

Step 3: Share "how you dunk" with friends and family and challenge them to the Slam Dunk Book Challenge.

On social media, use the hashtags #slamdunkbook and #givingtuesday and tag United Way of the Midlands.

There's your Slam Dunk Book Challenge Guide. Happy dunking!
