Full STEM Ahead is a series put out by the BASD, which focuses on new topics for our younger students exploring STEM ideas, presented by some of our finest teachers.

WEEKLY NUTRITION and FITNESS TIPS
Healthy Tips from Michelle Martucci, RD, LDN
Dietitian for Bethlehem Area School District
The ABC Tips - Ks:
Kale: Kale is known to contain the largest amount of antioxidants compared to any other fruit or vegetables. In addition, kale contains high amounts of vitamin A, C, and K. Consuming kale is known to fight free radicals (associated with cancer and other diseases). Try adding kale to your salad or make some baked kale chips.
Kefir: Kefir is fermented milk that contains probiotics. Probiotics are known to help with good digestion and support your immune system. Kefir contains different strains of probiotic compared to yogurt. You can consume both yogurt and kefir for double the probiotic power. Kefir is known to have a bitter taste, so try adding it to your smoothie.
Kiwi: One kiwi provides more than the recommended daily value of vitamin C. Kiwi also provides a high amount of vitamin K, which helps with blood clotting. Two kiwis contain the same amount of potassium as one banana, while providing less sugars and calories. The fuzzy skin might deter you from eating it, however the whole kiwi is edible. Just make sure you wash the outside of the fruit before consuming. Try adding kiwis to your smoothie or fruit salad.
