School garden for teaching

How to use garden for different lessons

Parts of speech

Students had to look around the garden and find eight nouns related with the garden, gardening, green...
... then add to nouns eight adjectives, verb, adverbs...
The second task was much more difficult
Pupils had to write Cinquain Poem according to the strict rules

Trees - the silent witnesses of the history

Although it was history lesson, it was directly connected with the school garden and biology
What express the rings on the wooden stump?
They express the age of the tree
How are the rings formed?
Teachers prepared for students some pieces of paper with historical facts written on them and smaller ones with the date of historical event
Firstly students read these facts ...
...and then they tried to match the name of the historical fact and the year when it happed
Finally they match them with the rings on the stump in correct order

The pupils measured the height of the tree by two very famous methods

Stick method

Stick method
...based on the measurement by two stick of the same lenght
One stick is aimed at eye level horizontally and the second one at the end of the first stick vertically
Then the students moved forewards and backwards until the end of the vertical stick covers the top snd the bottom of the tree. The distance between the student and the tree was the same as the height of the tree

The measurement according to the height of the person

The students asked one classmate from the team to stand next to the tree
... they tried to estimate how tall is the tree according to the height of the student

How to use ICT in a school garden

How we can identify the plant?

PlantNet application

allows to identify plants from the pictures we have in our mobile phones or iPads

...or directly by taking photos of a plant we want to identify

We put labels with the numbers to the plants in our raised beds and school garden
Firstly students took the photos and then the tried to identify the plants with using PlantNet application

Inquiry based learning
