Jim Crow Laws

A Jim Crow Law involved black and white people in restaurant. According to the website National Park Service it said that the white people had to be served in a room where the black people weren't, so black people were in a separate room in restaurants. It also said that they could be separated by being on different floors, but it has to be 7 feet higher. If they were to eat together the white people would be served first.

Another law included white people and African Americans people getting on, and on buses. In Alabama, the whites and African Americans had to had to have different waiting rooms while waiting for the bus. On the website National Park Service is stated that the African Americans had to have a separate ticket booth than the whites. The blacks also had to sit in the back of the buses.

The Great Depression

Right after World War 1 it was like a new era in America was happening. The worst economic downturn in the history of the industrialized world was known as the Great Depression and it lasted from 1929-1939. In October of 1929, the Stock Market crashed and investors were selling overpriced shares. Many people began to lose their jobs and couldn't find work to do. The United States was also in a severe drought and had many dust storms known as the Dust Bowl. The next three years became worse, but after the Great Depression, World War II began. The Great Depression affected the characters in "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry" because Papa needed jobs to make money so he could keep the land, but the Great Depression made it hard for him to find jobs. Also since they were in a severe drought with dry farmland, it was a little harder to sell crops.

These pictures show unemployed people marching and a farm during the Great Depression.

Abolishment of Slavery

The end of slavery for African-Americans meant they no longer were forced to work for the whites and other Americans. When Abraham Lincoln became president he wrote a proclamation. The proclamation stated, "And I hereby call upon the people so declared to be free to abstain from all violence, unless in necessary defense." It also stated how everyone who labor must recieve reasonable wages. “so the people who needed slaves to work in their fields and the people who were making money bringing slaves from Africa preached that black people weren’t really people like white people were, so slavery was all right,” (Taylor 230). This book took place after slavery ended in the United States, but the African-Americans were still not being treated equally.

"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." -The Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America

Lynching is the killing without trial and it occurred in the south. Lynching is in "Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry" when the Berrys are tarred and feathered after calling a white guy a liar. It also was in the book when the Wallaces were at TJ's house to punish him for stealing and hurting Mr.Barnett even though he wasn't the one who stole. The Wallaces were trying to hurt TJ and then in the book it said, "Then he spoke to the men: “Mr. Granger sent word by me that he ain’t gonna stand for no hanging on his place. He say y’all touch one hair on that boy’s head while he on this land, he’s gonna hold every man here responsible.”
