Spring Newsletter 2020 Amber chaplains

So timely for us, Spring is coming, we see the signs outside, catkins, primulas and daffodils blossoming and blooming; signs of new life and hope. In the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic with our lives thrown into uncertainty, and disruption with many isolated or sick, these words from the Bible give us hope: ‘God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.’ (Psalm 46:1 NLT).

We are looking to God as our hope and reaching out remotely to women, continuing to offer a listening ear, emotional support and prayer at this critical time. Our team are fantastic and working from home and being flexible. Our on-street outreach is suspended but we are continuing to reach out by phone and text, offering Basics Bank vouchers at this time of need. We want to respond to the needs of women and find creative ways of connecting, reducing isolation and bringing hope and peace. We value your support and prayer for us, and we for you, thank you!

On Street

We've had some encouraging encounters with women on the street recently. Amber’s key image is a woman's back with the words 'her value far above rubies and pearls', this is taken from the Bible (Proverbs 31:10) and shows our great value and worth because we are loved and made by God. Each woman we meet receives a card with that image and our contact details in her gift bag. One woman the other day, said she loved it, and kept it to look at and read. We were pleased the card was connecting with her and pray that she knows how valuable she is. The women we’ve seen have been very appreciative of our presence on the streets these last few weeks, giving out our bags, some hand knitted scarfs (thank you Laura and Jenny), and showing that we care. We have suspended outreach for the time being.

We are still waiting for a launch date for our new monthly drop in at Patrick House (hostel for homeless). A bit of red tape to get through and then hopefully we will be there as soon as the current curfew is lifted. We are thrilled about this new partnership and are hoping to connect with many of the women involved in selling sex on the streets who stay at Patrick House.

Launching our #IAMBOX campaign

We have recently trialled our new well-being gift box #IAmBox on a couple of women working in the industry and have received very positive feedback along with some additional ideas. Our webpage specifically for women working online is up and running and we have started ringing the 200+ women in Southampton currently advertising on Adultwork.com offering them support and/or a #IAmBox. The box contains a personal attack alarm, safety information, condoms, lube, pregnancy test kit, beauty gift, and some treats. We are hoping this is timely with things being a little quieter. If you can sponsor one of these gift boxes, it's just £20. Please support our new campaign https://iambox3.raisely.com

Macrame Workshop

We were a full house of 15 ladies at the macramé workshop in February. We had a fun time creating our own macramé heart wall hangings. Thank you, Jeanette #inlovewithknots for teaching us. We raised £75 for Amber. We were hoping to run another workshop in April, but this is on hold for now. Watch this space!

Cream Tea Fundraiser

Join us for this annual event! 6 JUNE (HOPEFULLY!) 2-4.30PM @ Bridlington Avenue. As well as scones and cakes, we are adding in cucumber sandwiches this year! The usual craft stalls will be running and a raffle.

Venues

MASSAGE PARLOURS - The women in the massage parlours were treated to crocheted hearts (thank you Mel & Mum) in February and red velvet cupcakes (thank you Becky). In March Sophie-Rose donated some of her @elaborate.doodler drawings which we will give out on our next visits.

LAP DANCING CLUBS - FYEO reopened and we managed to do a visit before it closed again like all other clubs in Southampton. We also managed to visit the dancers in Wiggle before closure and we heard that they’re contemplating an expansion into the neighbouring building in the future. We are in touch with several women who work in the clubs and hope to maintain this contact until we can visit again.

Regular Giving

Can you help Amber financially? We are thankful for all donations, big or small, to help run our chaplaincy service. Regular donations are amazing but if you can only offer a one-off then that’s great too! Please click here to donate or you can donate direct to our bank account (email admin@amberchaplains.org.uk for details).

Please do pray for Amber and the women we connect with. Much love and stay safe and healthy,

Nicky, Sharon & Sue
