October Newsletter Manheim Township Middle School 2021-2022

Introduction

As we draw closer to the end of October, we also are arriving at the end of the first marking period. Students have been working hard in their classes and have done a tremendous job adjusting to the new school year in a new building. We encourage students to continue to work hard.

Picture Day Rescheduled

Picture day has been rescheduled to October 22. Students will be dismissed at certain times throughout the day to the Performing Arts Center - Black Box for their pictures.

Traffic Safety on Campus

Please use caution when visiting our campus and follow all traffic signs. Our speed limit on campus is 15 mph. Please help us keep our children and staff safe.

Digital Citizenship Week

This week we have been celebrating Digital Citizenship Week. We have sent home family newsletters each day with topics and questions to discuss with your students in regards to their social media and technology usage.

Hispanic Heritage Month

From the middle of September to the middle of October, we celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month. In our Spanish classes, students learned about and celebrated the cultures from various Hispanic countries and created displays on bulletin boards in our Commons Hallway. Additionally, our English Language Learners of Hispanic heritage were featured in a video on our district social media accounts.

Report Cards Update

There have been some updates to our report cards to reflect student learning and progress. The updates include:

  • Percentages will be reported instead of letter grades. Additionally, there will be a new grading key listed on the report card.

Pounds Class

On October 6, 7th & 8th grade music classes will be participating in a POUND lesson in the library. POUND combines challenging rhythmic drumming with a total body cardio workout, resulting in a musical workout that is an absolute blast.

Math Courses Update

We wanted to communicate math course updates that have caused some confusion among parents regarding student placement. The names were updated to reflect the differences between our “pre-algebra” and “introduction to algebra” courses. Pre-Algebra courses are now named Math 7 or Math 8 (for grades 7 or 8). The names of our Algebra courses have not changed. They are still identified as Algebra I and Algebra II. Please note that the curriculum and content of our math courses have not changed. Please refer to the Educational Planning Guide (EPG) on the Middle School’s website to see the progression of MTSD math courses.

Midterms and Finals

Please note that for the 2021-2022 school year, Manheim Township High School and Middle School will not be administering midterm and final exams. We will utilize the additional instructional time gained from not administering midterms and finals to address student needs and any learning gaps attributed to lost instruction from the 20-21 school year. Additionally, MTSD will be using the 21-22 school year to evaluate the function and value of our assessments as we focus on the implementation of the MTSD Assessment Framework & Guidelines.

The MTSD Assessment Framework & Guidelines has been developed to address the district’s assessment and homework practices in an effort to provide equitable grading and homework practices for all students. For more details regarding the Assessment Framework & Guidelines, please reference the student handbook.

If you have any questions regarding your student’s assessments and assignments for the 21-22 school year, please reach out to your student’s teacher(s) or principal.

Updated Visitor Guidelines

At the moment, visitors and volunteers will be permitted in our K-12 buildings. In order to safely accommodate for visitors and volunteers, they must adhere to the following:

  • Masks will be required for all visitors and volunteers
  • Visitors and volunteers will be temperature-checked at the main office to confirm eligibility for entry. Checking at home, before coming, is also advised.
  • Visitors and volunteers will follow all hygienic practices (hand washing and respiratory etiquette while in our buildings)
  • Those with any cold/COVID-related symptoms (for themselves as well as close friend/family contacts) are asked not to visit our buildings
