The Himalayas TJ Tibbettts

The Himalayan Mountain Range formed as a collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates, which 50 million years ago and continues today. They span 1,500 miles across the countries Nepal, India, China, Pakistan and Bhutan. The Himalayas have a positive and negative impact on the people living there. Deep in the Himalayas are two of the world's tallest mountains K2 and Mount Everest, but between the two there is over 277 deaths of climbers trying to summit. The Himalayas is fascinating to learn about and in this essay there is content rich information about how the were formed, where it occurred, and its affect on people in surrounding areas.

Indian and Eurasian Plates colliding.

The Himalaya Mountain Range was formed when the Indian Plate slid under the Eurasian Plate, and pushed rock upward. 225 million years ago India was a large island situated off the Australian coast and separated from Asia by the Tethys Ocean. The supercontinent Pangea began to break up 200 million years ago and India started to drift north towards Asia. 80 million years ago, India was 6,400 km south of the Asian continent but moving towards it at a rate of between 9 and 16 cm per year. At this time Tethys Ocean floor would have been subducting northwards beneath Asia and the plate margin would have been a Convergent oceanic-continental. Between 40 and 20 million years ago the rate of northward drift slowed as the two continental plates collided and the Tethys Ocean closed. Neither continental plate could be subducted due to their low density. This caused the continental crust to thicken due to folding and faulting caused by pressure. The continental crust here is twice the average thickness at around 75 km. The thickening of the continental crust marked the end of volcanic activity in the region as any magma moving upwards would solidify before it could reach the surface.

The Himalayas are the largest mountain range and span across the countries Nepal, India, China, Pakistan, and Bhutan. They are 1,500 miles in area and cover most of Nepal. The Himalayas formed where they did, because they are on the border of the Eurasian and Indian Plate.When they collided, subduction of the Indian plate caused rock to be pushed up and form the Himalayas. The Himalayas also have large amounts of metamorphic rock and are still constantly contributing to the formation of sedimentary rocks. The formation of the Himalayas changed the earth's surface by creating two of the world's tallest mountains, K2 and Mount Everest (below). They are both over 8,000 meters with K2 at 28,251 feet and Everest at 29,029 feet.

The Himalayas affect the people that live around them by their sheer altitude and the weather. In the Himalayas, the average height of the mountain range is 19,685 feet and the average temperature is 35 degrees. There are about 152,00 people living in the
