Pastor's Message

Remove the Obstacles to Grace

By Pastor CJ Cousins

Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. And He said to them,

“It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.” — Matthew 21:12-13 NKJV

What Jesus did in the Temple was an astonishing act of protest against injustice! The issue wasn’t so much that they were selling the various animals and birds needed by the worshippers to offer sacrifices. This became a needed service, especially for those who traveled far, as well as those who needed to exchange secular monies for money that was acceptable in the Temple. The issue was, for the sake of greedy gain, they charged extremely high prices and oppressed the poor. This is why Jesus accuses the sellers and money changers of turning His house into a “den of thieves.” But the other very disturbing issue was where they chose to set up this marketplace environment. They placed it in the Court of the Gentiles, where the non-Jewish people of the nations came to worship. During the crowded festivals, this large space got significantly consumed with noisy crowds around merchant’s tables, creating a major obstacle for the very people God wanted to reach with the Gospel of His grace! This is why Mark’s Gospel account includes Jesus’ fuller quote of Isaiah 56:7,

“…My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations…” Mark 11:17 NKJV.

So, what are obstacles to grace that Jesus is ready to protest against in your life, your home or our worship? Because when we lose focus on Jesus and those He’s trying to reach with His grace, He starts turning over tables and shaking things up! Jesus will do what He has to do in order to get us to refocus on Him and His offer of grace for all.

healthy living seminar at IMamm center

On, July 20, Willy Yonas gave a seminar on Living Healthy on a plant-based diet at the IMAMM Center, a community of Indonesian Muslims in DC. The Kusdarman family, active members of Vienna SDA Church, attended. Praise the Lord, it was a big success! Approximately 35 Muslim brothers and sisters came. There was a lot of enthusiasm and support for the seminar that included a long Q&A session. The event concluded with a delicious vegetarian dinner sponsored by this Muslim community. Background: Willy Nathaniel Yonas obtained his BS in Health Ministry from Heartland College, VA in May 2019. This past year, he interned with the Adventist Risk Dept and with a private health research company in DC. Willy has been volunteering at our Vienna church, helping with the youth Sabbath School. He is returning permanently to Indonesia by the end of July.
