BOARD OF DIRECTOR'S DECISION: VOLUNTARY DUES FOR 2021!

Dear Members,

We know it's been a tough year for many of us. Even though we will still have operating costs, we have decided to make membership dues voluntary this year.

If you feel inclined drop us a check for regular membership fee of $50 or above, we will more than appreciate it!

If you cannot make that happen we understand and will waive your membership fees for 2021. And as always, we wish you and your family the absolute best.

PRESIDENT'S FLY BOX / GARY SCOTT

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE | jANUARY 2021

We are excited to welcome Gary Scott as our new president for 2021. If you would like to read his very interesting "bio" - please "click here" and learn how Gary came to love fly fishing and becoming an active member of the "Conejo Valley Fly Fishers" club and the "Trout in the Classroom" organization.

Happy New Year to all…

”Out with the old and in with the new…”

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

As many of you already know , I will be taking over the helm from Charlie Beals as president of our club…While Charlie will go down in the history of our club for the fewest years of service as President, he will certainly not be forgotten during these past trying times. He has been a mentor to me while being a part of the Corbina Patrol in So. Cal…We have had hours of fun in the surf fishing for those elusive creatures.

As I look back on this past year, I realize that I have fished less, stood in long lines more than I thought possible. However, my passion for fly fishing has not wavered and has intensified. I’m ready for a change in my current lifestyle. You may be too!

So my question to all of you is what will you do? I need your input as to how we should proceed in order to promote our core values. What do you think our mission statement should be under the current circumstances?…

While we are currently are under a statewide sanctioned stay at home order due to the Covid pandemic, how will we proceed with our club and each of our passions for fly-fishing?

More importantly how can we make your fly-fishing experiences more productive and memorable?

The current Board members of our club will be meeting this next week to review our options for the future. We will continue with our phenomenally drafted monthly newsletter by Cece Rubin. We will continue with Zoom meeting presentations of keynote speakers within the fishing community.

If I had to make predictions about when we will meet again, I would say we might be able to gather by the early summer but that depends on several factors which none of us have control over…

As for my activities I will work remotely, meet remotely, wear a mask, tie flies, build flyrods, research and plan remote fishing trips for the summer, read more, and keep in touch remotely with family and friends…

Want to join me?...Give me a call to discuss options about what we can do with and for our club…I look forward to your responses…

Remotely,

Gary Scott | Conejo Valley Fly Fishers President

"Planning for 2021"

One of the things I always check off of my to do list the last week of the year is to purchase my fishing license with my reasons for this being twofold. The first is that I just want to make sure that I am prepared for any fishing opportunity that may present itself, no matter how early in the new year, and second, it engenders thoughts of the fishing yet to come.

Joe, Mike and I always meet up sometime during the first two weeks of the year and plan our fishing dates for the entire year. Sitting over breakfast or lunch we pull out our calendars and figure out how all three of us can get together each month for a four day (or longer) fishing trip somewhere.

For most of our trips it will be the eastern Sierra with its vast array of streams and lakes and unmatched natural beauty. What a great fishing destination to have right in our own backyard!

We also like to mix it up a bit and take a couple of trips to other locations. For the past ten years we have spent every September fishing for big browns on the Owyhee River in eastern Oregon, something I recommend every one of you put on your bucket list.

We have also fished on the south fork of the Boise River in Idaho, Calebra Creek in southern Colorado, the Cimmaron and Red Rivers in New Mexico, Pyramid Lake in Nevada and the Gulf of Mexico among others. You get the idea. The point is to have something to look forward to and to plan for which helps mitigate the sting of the year's setbacks.

Even the communist Chinese virus didn't hold us back last year and with vaccines now available this year should be even better. So get out there and try someplace new. You just may be surprised at what you discover.

Happy New Year and I hope you all have great fishing in 2021! - Scott Olson

Jan 5, 2021 | HOW TO PLAN A FLOAT TRIP

I can't think of a better way to spend time with those close to me by spending a day floating and fishing a river. As more people are finding there way on the water the question of how to plan a float logistically can arise. I hope this video answers many of those questions. As with most things are are many variables and I tried my best with this video to hit all the major points. READ MORE
