All persons licensed to conduct a restaurant, shall serve either white people exclusively or colored people exclusively and shall not sell to the two races within the same room or serve the two races anywhere under the same license. This means that colored and whites have different entrances.

The Great Depression

The Great Depression was a severe worldwide economic depression that took place during the 1930s. The timing of the Great Depression varied across nations; in most countries it started in 1929 and lasted until the late 1930s. Over the next several years, consumer spending and investment dropped, causing steep declines in industrial output and rising levels of unemployment as failing companies laid off workers. It was also a time where economy had dropped and almost EVERY thing that had been put on sail was HALF the price of what is originally was.

Abolishment of slavory

The end of slavery for African Amaricans meant that blacks and whites could be equal and not be treated like servants. Now African can work hand in hand with whites and there won't be AS much raceisum. As it states in the abolishment of slavery "And I hereby call upon the people so declared to be free to abstain from all violence, unless in necessary self-defense; and I recommend to them that, in all cases when allowed, they labor faithfully for reasonable wages." So it states that African amaricans are now able to be free. It also states that in the book that “If I’d’ve knocked his girl down, you know what’d’ve happened to me?” Taylor 210


Lynching means to to put to death, especially by hanging, by mob action and without legal authority. In the book lynching was a type of threat “These folks gettin’ so bad in here. Heard tell they lynched a boy a few days ago at Crosston.” And they use lynching to teach blacks a lesson
