Why Problems Surface
  • We perceive problems whenever circumstances do not conform to the way we think things ought to be.
Distinction between two types of problems

“Technical” and “Adaptive.”

Technical leadership is that which has clear goals, proven current technology to accomplish the goals, experts available to skillfully use the technology, and narrowly confined constituencies to judge whether the goals have been meot.


By contrast, adaptive challenges arise when the problem cannot be solved with current knowledge and skills and when the problem itself challenges the validity mof our existing beliefs and values.

Adaptive Challenges to Adaptive Leadership

Adaptive leadership is given to impacting the environment. Biology teaches that relationships between living entities are circular and interactive. Our organizations are also living systems, being composed not just of capital goods and technology, but of people.

Social Intelligence

"Effective leadership is more about having powerful social circuits in the brain. Including but not limited to sufficient interpersonal competencies."

Authority & Leadership


noun:the power or right to give orders, make decisions, and enforce obedience.


noun: the action of leading a group of people or an organization.

Leadership Vs Authority

Authority is usually someone generating equilibrium. Whereas someone exercising leadership is probably generating disequilibrium.


The Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), was a program first initiated on March 23, 1983 under President Ronald Reagan. .

The purpose was to develop a sophisticated anti-ballistic missile system in order to prevent missile attacks from other countries, specifically the Soviet Union


Culture is made up of the values, beliefs, underlying assumptions, attitudes, and behaviors shared by a group of people. Culture is the behavior that results when a group arrives at a set of - generally unspoken and unwritten - rules for working together.

Leadership is closely related to the culture of the followers.

The many things that differentiate cultures are the same deciding factors of how a leader leads.


Communication skills are also important in regards to being a leader, but how these skills are perceived differs among and within cultures.


Leaders are also expected to have a vision, or a plan that directly explains how they will achieve their goal, however, how this is displayed differs from culture to culture.
