The Church of Saints Peter and Paul is located in Scranton's historic West Side neighborhood, In the spring of 2019, the retaining wall supporting the east stairs collapsed due to water infiltration and freeze-thaw. We came on to restore the ashlar stone wall and limestone steps. We inspected the damage and worked with the contractor already hired by the church to do the work. The contractor carefully dismantled the crumbing wall under supervision, and meticulously labelled and retained the red stone of the wall, and the limestone capstones. We provided details for the random ashlar stone, rubble wall backup, the anchors and flashing for the capstones, and resetting and patching the limestone treads and paving with Dutchman repairs. We also provided detailed masonry restoration specifications, including historic mortar mixes to match the red colored pointing mortar. We worked closely with the contractor to ensure that the specifications were followed correctly, and to ensure careful execution of the work. Once the side stairs were restored, the front stairs were restored in the same fashion to prevent similar collapse.
