St Joseph's Newsletter Term Four, Week Seven

Dear Families and Friends

Welcome to Week 7. A big thank you to Miss Laura Quinn for leading the school so well from Wednesday - Friday last week. I had the opportunity to gather with the 12 other principals in the Kimberley Diocese to discuss the CEWA strategic plan for 2019 and focus on the specific requirements for our school. We also farewelled principals who are leaving at the end of this year: Pamela Brown (Mullen), Michael Pepper (Broome) Peter Eagan (Ringer Soak) and Dean Savoia (Gibb River). We wish them all the very best with their future endeavours.

During these final weeks of the school year, students have been issued with the challenge of being 'WESTies.'

W - Welcome. Aim to say good morning to at least 10 people upon arriving at school

E- Encourage. Encourage at least 10 times over the course of the day

S - Say Sorry. Do this as required.

T - Say Thank you. It is important to show appreciation to those who help us in many different ways.

As parents and carers, when we ask our children how their day was at school we often receive a very short 1 or 2 word response! Instead, ask your child: How did you show kindness today? By doing this you should gain a much deeper insight as to whom your child interacted with at school and the manner in which this occurred. This will also echo the conversations that are being had with children at school and reinforce the types of positive behaviours we expect to see at St Joseph's each and every day.

Autism Awareness Football Game -this Thursday from 5:30pm

A big thank you to the staff involved in organising what should be a great event. Come down to the Town Oval for a free sausage and settle back for what promises to be a highly entertaining game of football! Drinks can be purchased on the night with all proceeds going towards the WA Autism Foundation. Students are encouraged to come dressed in their school uniform.

Year 1 and Year 2 Excursion

Congratulations to Mrs Jen Rudyard, Miss Stewart, support staff and students who participated in an engaging excursion held at Mirima National Park last week. Students participated in a guided tour with Miriwoong elders which was followed by a didgeridoo performance.

Mini Vinnies

Our hampers are looking great and Miss Deb has spent many hours equally sharing the goods that have been generously donated by our school community. We look forward to giving these hampers to those in need prior to the end of the school year. Thank you for your support of this worthy cause.

School Playground

Please take 2 minutes out of your day to complete the following survey regarding our main school playground:

Hard copies of this survey will also be available at our Christmas Concert. We look forward to receiving your feedback!

Christmas Concert

As our preparations for the concert are being finalised, I am hopeful that our families and friends have a clear understanding of what will be taking place next Thursday. The following are some common questions we are asked with corresponding responses.

Q: What time will the Leisure Centre be open?

A: The Leisure centre will be open from 5:00pm on Thursday 29th November for families and friends. It is anticipated that our concert will begin at 5:30pm.

Q: Will the St Joseph's school bus pick up families and take them to the Leisure Centre?

A: Yes, however the school needs to be notified as to who needs to be picked up beforehand. Children who are unaccompanied by an adult will not be picked up and will not be granted entry into the Leisure Centre for the concert performance.

Q: Am I able to buy food on the night?

A: Yes, sausages and hamburgers can be purchased with all proceeds going towards the P & F. Drinks and snacks will also be available.

Q: Is it okay if I bring my own chair?

A: Yes, we have checked with the Leisure Centre and they are happy for people to bring their own chairs. Please note that only a limited number of chairs will be provided. Families are most welcome to bring their picnic blankets as well.

Q: What time will it finish?

A: It is anticipated that the concert will finish at (or not long after) 7:00pm.

Q: Do I need to pay?

A: No, the fee for the hire of the Leisure Centre has been covered by the P & F. Please bring money if you wish to purchase food and drinks.

Q: Can I leave after my child has performed?

A: Ideally, we would like all children to remain until the end of the concert. Awards will be given throughout the evening, there will be a whole school performance and hopefully a special visitor will drop in to say hello before we go home! Also, as a courtesy to the other performers please stay to support them. If you need to take your child early, please let their teacher know.

Q: What else do I need to know?

A: Each family will be provided with a garbage bag for their rubbish collection at the end of the night. This will make our pack up a more manageable process. A survey will also be available regarding our 2019 plans for the main playground at school.

Please closely monitor young children and be conscious of not moving around the Leisure Centre whilst the performances are taking place. An area will be set up at the back of the Leisure Centre for toddlers who may need a break.

We look forward to celebrating what promises to be a memorable occasion! We are still looking for volunteers to assist with the preparation and sale of food. Please make contact with the office if you are able to help out.

Our Advent Liturgies will continue to take place each Monday in the Library at 8:00am over the remainder of the school year. Parents and friends are most welcome to attend.

Children's Liturgy

It has been wonderful to see so many children attending Children's Liturgy in recent weeks. Children's Liturgy takes place at Sunday Mass (8:30am) during the school term. All children are most welcome to participate.

Community Christmas Carols

The Community Christmas Carols will be at the Picture Gardens on Sunday 2nd December at 4:30pm. We look forward to seeing you there.

Enjoy the rest of your week.

Chaplain's News

During term 4 we have been implementing the ‘Seasons of Growth’ program with some of our year 5/6 students. It has been wonderful to see each one keenly interested in the weekly well-being classes and building on the previous level accomplished in year 4. Students have participated in a wide range of activities including group discussions, art/craft, stories, journaling and guided reflection. All are looking forward to the remaining three weeks and the special celebration class at the end of term.

Also during weeks two and three, the student councilors and faction leaders were privileged to have two special leadership development classes organized by ‘Youth With A Mission’ (Perth). Students, through shared discourse and the performance of challenging activities, learnt of the qualities that make a good leader and how to 'bravely' prepare for transition in life (such as high school).

Thank you for your prayers for the children and their programs over the 2018 school year.

Look forward to seeing you in 2019

Mr Jamie (Chaplain)

St Joseph’s School is a Nut Awareness Zone

We have a student who has a touch-sensitive, life-threatening nut allergy. Please do not send nut products to school in recess or lunch boxes. This includes peanut butter, Nutella and many muesli bars.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Canteen Volunteers Wanted

Miss Kris is looking for parents or friends of the St Joseph’s community who may be able to lend a hand. As they say, many hands make light work! If you can assist in any way, please have a chat with Kris or the Principal.

St Joseph’s School Uniforms

At St Joseph’s School we take great pride in our appearance. The school uniform is also an important aspect of child health and safety. It is a requirement that all students wear a St Joseph’s uniform (including a hat with our logo) that is purchased from our uniform shop. Similar items bought elsewhere may not be worn to school.

Please note that our “no hat, no play” policy will be enforced.

See our website for a full range of uniform items.

Uniforms may be purchased at any time from our office.

Praying the Rosary

Sr Marcella will lead us in one decade of the rosary each Friday at 7:35am on the grass outside the administration building. Please feel welcome to join us for five minutes of prayer.

New Enrolment Policy

The West Australian School Education Act (1999) stipulates that information about immunisation status and date of birth must be supplied when applying to enrol at school. As of 2018, a child’s birth certificate and immunisation documents must be provided before they can commence their schooling at St Joseph’s.

Thank you for your cooperation.
